Default My Transmission Protection Switch Replacement and Prep

A few months ago a mechanic discovered a leaking transmission overload protection switch leaking through the electrical prongs and into the wiring harness.

Merlin was such a great help via PM on what to do, and how to do it.

His thread is here for the process.

Here is my leak. Pretty obvious what it is:

Now down to business... I'm not exactly a fan of road grime mixed with ATF as a decent shampoo and conditioner. All of this needs to be cleaned before I can take the assembly apart and avoid contamination.

Yes I know the differential is way in the back and the leak is forward... So here is my chance to satisfy my OCD .

Not much space to work right? Well it gets worse but I will make it work!

Now onto cleaning...

My formula for dissolving grease:
- Simple Green
- WD-40
- Brake Parts Cleaner
- Lots of nylon and brass bristle brushes.

And we're off the the races!

Been putting an hour in each day for cleaning. Pictures may seem instantaneous, but it was more of a slow, methodical process..

Got a little obsessive with the webbing areas of the crossed member and differential case. Q-tips and WD40 worked great at breaking down the grime. A pressured spritz of brake cleaner finished the job.

And it all cleaned up real nice. Next area of focus is the transmission case itself and the wiring.

Cleaning sucks..but you'll probly live longer and go faster with simple mineral spirits...a much safer and purpose driven solvent.

WD40 isnt a solvent, and brake cleaner..viscous stuff, and dries up far far too fast. You could scrub the entire underbody of the car with a quart of spirits..it wont boil away on you.

Besides you're so dang lucky to be THIS CLOSE to THIS resource...that oddly enough is right here, but cant find anywhere else in the US it seems. The only way to do better is dry ice, and then even so, you want to get the wet oily layer off first.

Works 1000x better than hand scrubbing..after this, any hand work is once a year "maintenance" on surfaces.

I get pretty good traction with 409 cleaner for this kind of job. And not toxic, I assume.

I've generally found "Purple Power' to be the most aggressive detergent in dealing with oily/greasy problems.

More... Transmission protection switch wiring looks okay (shocked.) Going to give it a spritz with brake cleaner.

More cleaning done. I can now work with bare hands and not look like I played with hot tar.
