Default rebuilding early upper control arms....ball joint

I've seen the kit with the boot, ball joint cup, etc that's available for an easy approach to "overhaul" an upper control arm ball joint. I am curious about replacing the entire ball joint. I haven't been able to find any threads discussing removing/replacing, and I don't know of a source for replacements. (Roger, I checked your website and I didn't see them...). Does anyone know if this is something that is generally a bad idea? Are the replacement ball joints even available?

i have new bushings ready to install, and i was thinking that while i am at it, since the control arms will be off of the car, just replace the ball joints. i think one of the advantages of the kit with new cups is "no need to remove control arms" but if they are already off pushing out the old ones and installing new ones might be easier...

You can get new OE inner bushings?

the bushings are a home brew experiment. manufactured in my garage. nothing really special...urethane with graphite. I'm going to try a lubricant to prevent squeaking and should hopefully last for a long time...i haven't decided on the material yet....i am thinking about a lubricating wax with high temp melting point and graphite. i found one lubricating wax that's waterproof, claims to be resistant to soap and "grease" and has graphite mixed in.

Powerflex bushings with Powerflex grease....they've done all the research and development for you.

If removing the arms to press out and replace the bushings, I would just buy a rebuilt arm from Mark. The benefit to the ball joint kit is to be able to replace that without having to access the arm mounting bolts and remove the shock to get it out.

I put poly graphite bushings onto the front arms of a 914 once. Even greased, they squeak3d like crazy on every little bump. Pulled them back out and cut some relief grooves into them without going all the way through l. It helped hold the grease and lessened the squeaking, but never completely went away. When I restored the car, I used a roller bearing kit from Shine Racing Systems that's fantastic - no stiction, silent, operation, and total precision (no rubber defection).

I'll have the control arms out of the car because i'm replacing the bushings with my own frankenstein creation, and testing the effectiveness/durability of the hard wax lubricant. So with the arms out, replacing the entire ball joint is probably easier than using the refurb kit. I just don't have a source for the ball joints.
