Default Laguna Seca Results

Laguna Seca was a fantastic paid spectator event. More hardware than Ive seen at any porsche club event!. The weather was spectacular! Thanks everyone that showed up for all the help and cheering. It really made the weekend even more enjoyable for all the hard work!

Mark Anderson did an awesome Job running a personal best 1:34ish time and beating more cup cars than Ive seen on one track in a long time. (and a couple of GT3RS and motorsport upgraded cup cars (basically a GT3R without the flares).

I ran a 1:41.xx , all weekend, which was about a second off my best time, but i guess my luck ran out with the used tires. my fronts found in the trash 2.5 years ago, just were aweful and i had a push that made it incredibly slow on 3 of the major turns . However, for how bad the car felt, the time is pretty good. In fact, at least it was consistant. reviewing my laps, of the 18 laps, 90%of them were within .3 seconds of each other, while in a heated battle with a '98cup car on slicks that I eventually beat by a key pass in traffic.

The guy i beat in the race was working me over the entire weekend, in a '98 cup car on Yoko racing slicks. I owned him on turn 6 and the corkscrew, and he was beating me everywhere else!! We both had a great time and battle and talked about it after the race!. Dont know the places, but after qualifying 32nd, i think i managed to make it up to the mid 20s by mostly attrition and a few passes. In class i was 2nd (GT2S). The ole Holbert car ran like a champ, and had no issues. Hopefully, i wont find any more cam sprocket teeth stuck to my oil drain plug magnet this next oil change!! Will have to put on some better used front hoosiers for my next double regional SCCA race next month.

Great job by Dean to run a 1:44.9 in practice and possibly better in the race. His car looked great and ran well. If he fixes the fuel pick up problems he had in the race, he would have been even faster!
Thats the last of the " mouse motor" racing for him as he moves up to a 6.5 liter stroker.

Great times, I remember taking a ride with Mark A, osme years ago, I believe I was in his car for one of his previous bests at Laguna...a time of 1:36, a very low 1:36 to boot. That is with me in his "old" racer with 390 rwhp and I guess about 3000 lbs (with me in the car).

Here are some quick stats:

330 rwhp. 2900 bls 1:41
390 rwhp, 3000 lbs 1:36
510 rwhp, 2900 lbs, 1:34

Good math???

ahhh, the beauty of logrithmic curves of racing. laws of deminshing returns at laguna happen around 1:40ish. remember, mark anderson a year later than your ride, did the same 1:40.xx as me without you in the car and on DOT tires. (at 420ish to the rear wheels) . 2 years later, ran a 1:36 with slicks in a great battle with a cup car. 485rear wheel hp later and even lighter, he is spinning 1:34.3.

my times are on DOTs as well, and your ride with mark were on slicks im sure.

the point is, to make the jump at laguna from a 1:35 to a 1:33, you better be prepared to spend $100k. to make the jump from 1:33 to 1:30, you better be prepared to spend an additional 200k. to make the jump from 1:30 to 1:28, probabably another 100k on top of that!.

any 350 to 400 rear wheel hp car can run 1:36s on slicks with a good driver at 2500lbs or so. any 300hp car at 2000lbs will do the same. the trick is getting the car that light or that powerful for the least amount of money and have it reliable. Now, running 1:36s on DOTs is a little more challenging (hence $150k cupcars, Comp coupe vipers, and the like)

Mark Anderson ran a 1:36 on DOTs and with a little less weight, ran 1:34.x on slicks at 485 rear wheel hp. (not 510, as Joe fans car was actually in the 517rear wheel, but not this weekend with a blown head gasket)
my car was more like 320hp rear wheel, but had logged a 140.2 last season in Oct.

so, to your math below, you actually have it pretty close to make the point that hp is important, but other things are as important. remember, HP only takes care of 1/3 of the equation!! there is just as much time in braking and in cornering in road racing. If mark also did the same 20% increase in road handling and braking, his time would be in the 1:20s! (ie less 20% weight , or 600lbs, or as light as the lighter porsche turbo cars, and lower the car by 2" and better aero).

So, HP is important. ( I loose exactly 1 second on the main straight to Mark Anderson, just on HP alone . turn 11 to start finish 7 seconds vs his 6 seconds, in just over 1/8 mile.) so, HP for me could buy me at least 1 second per long straight and .5 second per short straight, or 3 seconds.

Mk
