Good Radio Replacement

Good Radio Replacement
So I have decided to sit my radio/tuner that I picked up for my '79 on the shelf instead of installing it. Once I get everything finished up, if the interior is in as good of shape as the radio, I'll install it. However, until then, I'd like to get a radio that fits very well with out any cutting involved (if that is even possible ) I realize a single DIN radio is probably what I'm looking for but I thought maybe someone found one that worked extremely well. Any help would be appreciated. I was looking at the below but wanted to get everyone's input. Thank you in advance.

i found a couple cheapies on amazon/ebay that don't have the "look at me" disco ball chrome and led lights....somewhat vintage blaupunkt look....super cheap....like $40. Most of my "listening" is from my phone by bluetooth. easy install (they have a basket that you slide in and lock by twisting some barbs....the head unit slides into the basket and clicks into place). this one has a touch screen and the colors for leds can be set to different shades. it also has an input for a backup camera. i adjusted my screen so that there are no brilliant colors...almost like a dark grayscale. i went with this option because i just didn't like the flashiness of so many of the higher end units. no complaints at all.

Thanks for sharing. Did you have to cut the trim at all, or if yours was already cut, do you think it would work with an uncut one? Do you think you could track down a link for it? I'd be interested in what the title of the radio is. There are a million on Amazon and it is difficult to narrow it down. I'm with you, I don't want a flashing one. More vintage the better IMO. Thanks again
there are actually a couple models that are about the same price and have a similar look. I got that one cuz I was thinking I might connect a backup camera... I'll find links for you

You need a L shaped adapter. If you go with the continental I would chose one without a CD player, the unit isn‘t so deep. If you have Bluetooth you serve music from your smartphone.

I would go with something like this one... The new Bremen with Bluetooth, usb, sd-card etc. It looks the part and won't disturb the overall look of your interior. I really like that they have hidden the connections under the "cassette-lid". It costs a few bucks of course but it is hard to beat with the nice retro look. Here's an example installed in a classic car...

That's nice looking. I don't really like touch screens as it's hard to press precisely where you want while driving down the road and am a ***** and switches guy. Nice that this one has some buttons and a volume ****.
Also depends on what the end goal for the stereo is. In a couple of the 928 systems I've built, I've needed 4-6 channels and high preamp output voltage to drive amps, which eliminated a lot of options.
Found a NLA high output Sony I liked with integrated Moffset amp and a simple look to drive some Focal speakers directly from the deck I had in my 81 Euro S
In my 84 Euro S, I used a Pioneer because I needed the high preamp voltage for the amps. Doesn't have an original look, but the stereo in this car is crazy, so wasn't worried about maintaining originality. Sounds fantastic.

Looks like the Continental TR7412 will fit in a 79 without the trim plate based on this pic.
At some point, the trim around the radio/HVAC/etc moved to a 2 piece setup. (maybe 80 or 81??) This left room for just about any DIN sized radio you'd want to put into a 928.
Again we 78-79 owners are pretty limited on aftermarket unless we want to cut that surround that came out a year or so later.
Good luck with the project, please send pics of your install.
Thx a bunch!!

Just one thing to consider if you do not want to cut any of the stock parts. With this kind the reset button console has to be trimmed slightly as can be seen in this pic.

Do you happen to have any suggestions or pics for installing? I’m curious if I just need to figure out how to remove the center console trim or if more needs to be removed. Thanks for any help.
