I agree. P.O. @avalon68 installed this model in the 89 I bought from him (with Audisons all around) and it's very good. Don't know if it would fit the '79 aperture without Dremeling, the power draw etc, however.

 

I did the amazon head unit and it actually looks pretty decent.

 

Sorry, I didn't take any pics of my install. In my '91 S4, some previous owner had pulled the original radio and installed an Alpine head unit that was supposed to work with cutting edge Apple technology like the iPod. No Bluetooth. I popped the trim bezel off the unit, pulled it and it's cage out of the car and disconnected the tangle of wires. I used one of the Schoche adapter wiring harnesses, but I don't remember which one. If you look on the Crutchfield website, you should be able to find a suitable one. I also bypassed the amplifier and ran new wires from the head unit to the area of the amplifier and tied into the existing speaker wires, again using Schoche adapters. I did not cut any of the existing wires and I tried to disturb things as little as possible. Admittedly, sound quality is not great, but then again, it's better than what was in there and I have more capability than before. Bluetooth hands free calling, tunes off my phone and USB memory stick input are real plusses. Hope that helps. Remember, my car is a '91 so YMMV.

Would love to install this if it fit. Looks great and I think goes with "BLAUPUNKT" theme of car whether it's a 78 or a 95.
Question remains, would it fit the narrow opening of the 78-79 trim.

 

This looks pretty good, but NO way it'll fit a 78-79 without some surgery on the side trim..

 

I have the Blaupunkt also and I don't think it's worth 350 €.
From the Equipment every Kenwood or the Conti is doing the same for 150 €.

 

Can I get some direction on tracking down a frame for my original radio as well? There are a couple on eBay but I don’t believe they are correct for my ‘79. Thoughts?

 

No that's not the connector you need.

I recently purchased a factory period correct Blaukpunkt radio/cassette player that was taken out of S4/GT/GTS.
Unless i'm doing something wrong It is too long to fit into my 1982 928 (base/auto).
The original radio in my 1982 had the same width face plate but was more like these shorter radios(see below).
I dont think i'm doing anything wrong with the attempted and failed installation of the Blaupunkt.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Here's pretty well max length of Radio you can fit, 175mm (can't quite see with angle of photo
I doubt you'll get anything longer in there
You may hit the Seatbelt relay which is also back here, removed mine as car has S4 seats and no swtich in buckle, so may need moving elsewhere

the radio i pulled out was just over 5 inches long.
Did your 175mm radio fit into your 1982 928 ?

 

First picture is it sitting in, the thing below it is the warning light to give scale
It backs almost onto the pneunatic solenoids that control the vents

The cradle old radio came in not holding things back ?

 

The new head units without cd are only 100 mm deep.

So here’s the issue w trying to install radios in late vs early cars. There are 2 dimensions of DIN style radios. I had a Sony unit in my GTS with trim around it and it fit fine.
The same radio would not fit in my 79. You’ve got to find a radio that is narrow and you can take the trim off it for the early cars as there is no side to side “cut out” in the trim.
Here’s what I mean. Below are the 2 Continental radios that most get. One with CD, one without. The one without will fit a later car, but you’ve got to put the trim plate on it to take up the space. The CD version will NOT fit an early car even without the trim plate, unless. You trim out the surround like this below.
