S4 engine pricing, availibility.
For my purposes, 928 International's pricing sets the market on used parts prices, including engines. (Of course there are exceptions for unobtanium and/or items that are in unusual cosmetic condition, like interior pieces).

Of course, you have to check if they actually have them. I seem to recall that seeing something on their website and thinking it was pretty reasonable, but finding out they didn't have any. Could be mistaken.
"Used S4 engine, in good condition."
Those words are becoming words that can can no longer be used together, expect in very rare situations.
(Like someone had one rebuilt and then totaled the car.)
I've got many of these engines, on shelves, pallets, rolling dollies, still in vehicles, etc.
However, 31-35 year old all aluminum engines, sitting around soaking in acidic coolant (or drained and dried out), are considered to be "cores" buy us (possibly suitable for rebuilding.)
I wouldn't sell one to anyone....even ones that are still in vehicles and were running when they were parked.
But we can build you one...as long as you are not in a hurry.

I'd imagine that once one or two engines don't meet the "expectations" of the buyer and then need to be shipped back to Mark, the profit margin drops way below the amount of effort required.
(The cost of shipping things around the country has become a major factor!)
Probably getting close to the futility of selling interior parts....almost impossible, because of the buyer's expectations versus what is available.

No surprise:

That is another unfortunate situation.. I sell 914-6 parts and shipping has become a major hurdle.
I'm hearing tales of used engines being bought then found to be damaged and unusable. And the sellers don't want to return the money.
Hard to make sure a 928 engine is good long distance.
Raised this before about new engine blocks being made by an aftermarket entity out of another type of AL so the casting material and finishing processes would be a "bit" less costly.

Mostly the Automatic version or also with 5 speed?
I agree it seems there would be a demand for some blocks. Not long ago there where some castings for the 3.6 911 engine cases but that whole aftermarket supplier went south. I would imagine you would have to tool up for 1000 blocks to even make it worth while ? Maybe 500

Since Porsche is no longer making any (and if they did, I couldn't imagine the cost) and good used engines are very hard to find, it would have a great market potential. However I don't have a clue about such matters. I know bespoke engines in the hot rod community are being made and sold.
Truthfully, the 928 engine wasn't the best V8 design and it had/has a bunch of issues. Maybe look at another engine block from another vendor and make it work in the 928?
Putting a modern engine and transmission in a 928 would totally transform the car for the better.
Its performance would be head and shoulders above anything currently available for the 928.
Think Panamera performance while still looking like a 928 - that would be one awesome car!
