Default 928 Dash Repair - Again

This work has been done for a few months but I finally got around to writing it up. Full details are at the article on my website at the link below.

Hi Harvey-

Impressive work! It turned out beautifully. A couple of questions:

- Can you talk about some of the time needed between steps? For example, how long after the body filler was applied and worked on was the foam applied? Did you have to wait for final bonding/outgassing before moving forward with certain steps?
- Did you do the painting yourself, or get it done at (what looks like) a body shop?

Thanks for sharing, it's inspirational.

Cheers

Thanks for sharing Harvey. Dash looks great! I'm goring to attempt this later this year. I'm sure I'll have some questions for you.

@Zirconocene to my knowledge, polyester body filler does not outgas. That said, all the filler and subsequent application of foam and leather happened over several days. I spent a lot of time getting the damn plastic vents to fit better. They took some fiddling.
I have my own paint booth. https://newhillgarage.com/2022/05/01...earcoat-paint/
But the dye drys very quickly and is not particularly "fumie" in the great scheme of things. I would not hesitate to spray it in a garage. It is not an isocyanate bearing product to my knowledge, which is the dangerous component in urethane based paints.

Thanks everyone for the positive comments!

Is that Surflex colorant able to change the color of interior pieces entirely? Or is it best used as a refresher to the original color. My interior is in great shape physically, but I like the idea of going to a different shade than burgundy

@LargeFarva I would contact the folks at ColorPlus for your question. Personally, I made a minor change in the upholstery color a few years back, I went from Champagne to Cashmere Beige. This is not a big jump but it worked out fine.

T

The area circled was really a hard area to get the cover laid down smooth for me. Did you have any issues here? Yours looks great

@gbgastowers Yes, that area was a problem and looked to be a problem from the factory. My bigger issue, which I didn't dwell on in the article is that I moved the entire leather piece a little closer to the windshield, to make sure there was absolutely good positioning of it over the vents. Not much, maybe 1/4". But yes, at the glove box I recall the fit to be sub-obtimal. Since that area had a good basis for glue, I was able to stretch it a little bit. Is it just me but the fitment of the glovebox from the facotry, at least on my car, is pretty rough considering the overall quality level of the car.

I always think that the glovebox fitment in these cars is...not great. I don't have the experience to be able to know if there was degradation (though I don't know who would use their glovebox that much) or if it was always like that. Anyway, I agree that those are often Tesla-level looking panel gaps around the glovebox.

Cheers
