the inevitable...

it was "LIDAR", I guess some sort of acronym for instant-on laser, and I was near a pack of cars. I was doing 100 or so, and he must have gotten a read on the others, wrote it for 80 in a 65. I think I can fight it.

Great pic! You're lucky he didn't take you to jail! I asked a HP to cut me a break one time and he replied "the fact that I'm not taking you to jail, constitutes a break now doesn't it!", then gave me a ticket for 86 in a 55! I'll never forget that one. Then he told me the 911 was his favorite Porsche. I knew I was screwed!

Look at the bright side. That'll only cost you three points on your license for the next 4 to 7 years at $100 extra per point average per year on your insurance.
Rant Mode On:
Fair Warning to all: The Mass Pike (I-90 from the border to Boston) is Revenue Ally. Gone are the days of being able to safely autobahn your way across the state paying attention only to the task at hand and your V1.
The laser-based speed detection gear is apparently standard issue on The Pike now. Couple this with the way over the last 20 years Massachusetts has elevated the practice of separating you from your cash from an art to a Science and I-90 simply becomes frustrating.
Where's the trooper when the black Maxima driven by Persons of Questionable National Origin (see last rant) is slamming from the breakdown lane to the fast lane like it's an auto-cross course? What about the left-lane packer doing 50 talking on the cell phone and weaving from side to side? (These are but a few of the stupid driver tricks I witnessed on the way home about an hour - I guess - ahead of you. )
Rant Mode Off:
Rest assured it was not I that sensitized our Super Troopers to dark-colored 928s traveling West on I-90. I just set the cruise at 75 and sat all by myself in the right lane all the way home.
I got nailed last year by Lidar on the way to Beaver Run. I was doing 85 and had only sped up to that speed to get around a Charlie Foxtrot of left lane packers and semis that had been blocking all the lanes for miles - all the while a massive pile up waiting to happen since they were all following each other at about one half a car length.
It is time to investigate active counter measures for Lidar.
Last Rant:
I wonder how our thoughtful and obviously ethical Troopers are going to act when they discover their new-found powers of searches without a warrant and unlimited duration detention without charges or representation?

I'm thinking it's time for me to drive West and barricade-up with the 89's namesake Konecny...

Speaking from personal experience, you should always find a lawyer to represent you and get the charge reduced. All they want is your money. All you want is to get the charge reduced. I had a couple of run ins in Virginia where 19 over the posted is Reckless Driving. That's a lot more points than I wanted. Found a lawyer who knew the officer and had the charge reduced to Improper Driving. Now it won't show up in Georgia.

Besides, fighting a ticket *this* time is a good way to gain experience so that you can win *next* time when - perhaps - you really were not speeding and were "profiled" out to the shoulder because you were driving a sports car.
The patrolman may not be so lenient on the next speeding 928.

Why not just take a Defensive Driving Course, and get an Insurance Discount to boot? Sure there are fees, and 8 hours of a boring class, but your driving record stays clean at least.
Maybe your State is different, but in Texas it's a no-brainer if the class available to you. I should know, I just got a ticket for rolling through a stop sign (driving my Wife's huge 4 door family machine, and not even the 928!).

Not only that, Massachusetts has regulated most of the insurance companies out of the state - so there's little to gain by shopping around. Thankfully Geico is one of those that don't insure in MA, so you all are at least spared (somewhat) from my rant about Geico being one of the largest contributors of speed detection gear for local and state police forces. (If the government wasn't involved it would be called racketeering...)
