Seems like as soon as I fix one issue, another pops up
my trans is leaking like it opened a vein
maybe unrelated, but I just did the vac line refresh, and the 6 way was broken on half, so the trans was not getting any vac prior.
could it be that reintroducing vacuum caused a leak?
could it be the torque converter?
see pic of location of leak, any guidance is appreciated
thanks
Brent
Trans pump seal, torque converter seals and bearings, rebuild trans lines, and there are a few parts you wanna replace in the transmission while it is out (that can be done from the outside) at the very least.
I did it last year, (no lift) is not that bad, some good videos and guides on here if you considering doing yourself. As above some other seals and bearings you want to change while in there and would advise replacing the reverse clutch's while your in there, if its never been done they will be well worn.
Ya, not looking forward to this job, as I don’t have easy access to a lift, but this IS a project car, I just didn’t realize the vast amount of projects. address one issue and another pops up
I'm sure I’ll have many questions as this progresses
question 1. Can this be done with lift bars and jack stands?
question 2. Do I need to drop the entire rear suspension?

Yes, this is very doable on jack stands. And the whole read cradle comes out...as ONE piece. It's really very simple once you see how you do it.
Here's the rub:
If the front oil pump O-ring is hard and leaking, all the other internal O-rings and rubber piston seals are exactly in the same condition.
I get these transmissions in, for rebuild, when they no longer function from O-ring and seal leakage, which causes the band and clutches to slip more, wear more, and burn up.
A 3K rebuilt can end up costing 6K, when using the Genuine Mercedes pieces.
Rebuild the transmission and replace all the internal rubber parts....you will be over 50% of the way, with it out and partially apart, anyway.
Greg, do you have an exchange program? I bring you my tranny and purchase a rebuilt one?
or can you rebuild mine if I can get it to you?
local rebuild options are slim
thanks
Speedtoys, thanks for the vids, saving them for later

Hi Brent - You're fortunate that you live in California and Greg's not too far away. Whether you drive your transmission down to him for repair or freight, a 150-court cooler is the way to go.
I'm with Jeff (Speedtoys), furniture movers made the job much easier - whether it was lining up the transmission w/ torque tube attached or sliding the rear suspension around.
I would have your torque tube rebuilt at the same time - either by Greg or send it to Constantine. When you ship that, you use a pool noodle to protect the splines.
Anticipate a lot of crumbling rubber pieces that will drive the cost up. E.g., the ABS sensor grommets.
I need to do the clutch, torque tube bearing, transmission, brakes, suspension etc on a 78. I am working in my garage in Fresno and had no idea anyone in the area was working on 928s. It would be great to see your project sometime. If I can get everything apart in my garage on stands my plan is to take the transmission and torque tube to Greg. I drive to San Diego at least once or twice a month.

Im back down there passing through Feb 28th or so.
i'd be happy to lend a hand turning wrenches, be good to see the process up close before i dig in
i only know of 1 other 928 in the area, but i'm sure there are more hidden in garages around town
