Been lurking here for while so time to get my feet wet. Car is 1979 USA very original as best as I can tell, build date 05/79. Bought it from son of original as the story goes, who became unable to drive. Unfortunately, only paperwork I received was some invoices from 2014 and 2016 for work performed at Porsche shop in Broomall,Pa. They only put a couple 100 miles on it when I purchased it in Sept. 2019 so it sat for 5 years. I got it running and had Stan do some of the necessary stuff to make it safe. (he is the man)
Anyway, I'm about to pull intake apart and was hoping someone knows of any writeups for dummies like myself. I have searched and do have the CD's but not finding much on procedure.
Also, good reference for FD and WUR rebuilds and what I should replace other than all things rubber at 42 years old.
Sorry for the long post and I will be back with dumb questions as I dive in.
There is somebody on here, who you can ship your wur and fd to, and they will come back to you ready to go. Not sure what it costs, but I can tell you for sure it would be a big shortcut. Also, I think there is somebody in Australia who does the same. But keep in mind the FD and WUR are kind of a pair and should be addressed that way. The main parts to the system look at are:
WUR and FD
Injectors
Rubber boot between throttle body and intake manifold
Secret filter at inlet to FD
The two rubber lines.
There is not much to it, but the WUR and FD can be a real learning curve.
Don’t worry, we all had to start somewhere! Car looks good.
I would start with reading this manual. It’s short but it does have a learning curve. But if followed correctly probably can help you get the car going! https://928classics.com/bosch-kjetronic-cis-fuel/
I just started refreshing a '79 that had been sitting for, oh, 18 years. For the CIS refresh, to get it running, it took:
1. Replace the short section of rubber in the in-tank pump
2. Replace the fuel pump outside the tank
3. Replace the fuel filter
4. Replace the injectors with new
5. Replace the warmup regulator (I was lucky and had a NOS unit on the shelf)
6. Replace the fuel distributor with a rebuilt unit from 928Intl.
I was lucky and the fuel accumulator was still good.
This is the list of all the stuff it took to eventually make it run right. I started by doing #1, #2, #3, and #6 and using the 928 Classics document linked above (you will need to have a set of CIS fuel pressure gauges, don't waste your time trying to get a CIS car running without gauges- https://www.toolsource.com/fuel-inje...RoC-LgQAvD_BwE
This got it running but it was not happy, so I pulled the injectors and put in a new set, that made it run ok when hot but not cold. THe old WUR couldn't be adjusted to spec so I replaced the WUR.
The only additional data point I'd make is when setting the lean/rich setting on the fuel distributor, the 928Classics instructions suggested starting point is 11-15 turns clockwise. I ended up somewhere between 8 and 9 turns. Runs great now.

I sent all my 79 CIS stuff off to CIS Flowtech (http://www.cisflowtech.com)
I haven’t reassembled the car yet, but they did the work on my 78 924 as well and it runs perfectly.
One thing I’ll say is that they will test your injectors, but its likely better to just buy all new ones as they’re not that expensive.
Thanks, I will check them out. Great writeup on the CIS tuning which will come in handy soon (I hope). Anyone else with FD and WUR rebuild experience?
Thanks
Curt

I always take my FD and WUR to Fuel Injection Corp (FIC) in Tracy, CA. Robert's father started the business 30+ years ago and they also rebuild some of the ECUs, later MAFs and other FI related electrical and mechanical components. First thing I do when I buy a CIS car is take the FD and WUR to Rob for bench testing and a rebuild, which so far they all needed. I dont even try to start a CIS car thats been sitting until Ive installed a known good FD and WUR and go through the fuel delivery system and check that fuel is delivered at the specified rate. Saves much time and troubleshooting hassle. Link to FIC: https://fuelinjectioncorp.com/
I started this thread to bring together all that I could find on the CIS along with my experiences. Lots of links some of which have already been mentioned. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...is-system.html
Good luck and keep posting your experiences.
928Intl Fuel distributor rebuilds are $595, looks like FIC's are $599, not sure about CIS flowtech's pricing. I have used two (three?) of Mark's rebuilt units and they're cosmetically and functionally perfect. In general I like the challenge of digging into various 928 components and seeing whether I can DIY but for fuel distributors, ~$600 to know it's done right is a no-brainer.
@cpierso Beautiful black '79! I disassembled my WUR and saw much sludge/junk in there after buying a set of CIS fuel gauges showing extremely high cold pressure. After cleaning it extensively several times, the cold pressure improved but still too high. Stan also helped tremendously. I ended up sending the WUR/FD to (specialTauto.com) for rebuilt of my specific units. Awaiting for spring to install and check. Hopefully, you will get it running well soon!
