Does anybody know a good Garage in Atlanta area that refreshes 928 Engines without braking the bank?

What is 'breaking the bank' for you?

These are not crate 350's...and people that can refresh a 928 motor for you, you can list on one hand. Worldwide.

When you say "refresh", are you talking rebuild?? . . or a minor or major service ??

For 928 major service, you might be better off calling Greg Brown at Precision Motorwerks and shipping the car to him. The initial cost might be high, but you will only pay it once.

There are numerous shops that "work on Porsches", but very few that can do quality major work.

There are a couple, but they are backed up for months. Howard Wright in Peachtree Corners and a fellow who's name escapes me up near the SC border.

More information required:
What year engine?!
What is wrong with the engine?
What are your expectations for longevity and quality? Restore the engine to look new and run for another 100,000 miles or just make it run the best it can?
Define "breaking the bank"....what do you think this job should cost?

This is my first venture with 928s I can get a rebuilt engine for $8000 and I still have to get it put in by somebody that knows how to do it. The car runs pretty well. want to do partial rebuild now mostly mechanical refresh. dont want to spend $20,000. beleive me I know what i'm getting into as far as most prices. I' ve owned a 2001 twin turbo for 3 years and have worked on it, and Taken it in for maintenance. The car is a 1983 928s with 111000 miles on it, and has a 4.7 in it. I am a relocated Californian. I live in PhenixCity, Al. and nobody knows anything about Porsches here.

These are pretty bulletproof. Why not just drive it?
Or are you talking about just ancilliary seals, gaskets, motormounts, etc?

Does $8000 get you a complete engine or a long block where your injection, exhaust, water pump, timing belt, etc. needs to be transfered?

With that amount of miles you won't have to split the block and do the mains. Inspect the rod bearings but they are probably fine.

Otherwise it is just a reseal and head gasket service (have the valve guides and seals changed).

So you could get out for around $8000 for sure if your labor cost is lower than it is here in CA. It's when you have to pull the pistons and start machining that $$$ starts to really fly.

At 110k it should be just fine, maybe an intake job and water pump/belt job is it.

We really need a lot more information.
