Phone Dials - to have or not to have .... ?
Well, I clearly don't have enough projects ... so I figured that while I wait for my mityvac (so I can muck through the HVAC vacuum issue) I would obsess with the issue of whether to go back to original phone dials. I have a 1981 white 928 with the factory sport package. Strictly from a purest standpoint, I would like to remove my sport rims (polished) and go with a polished set of phone-dials to compliment the curves of the 928. What do you guys think? Also, there are a lot of 924 / 944 phone dials (7x16) that people are selling on eBay - is that the same rim that came with the 928 or is there a difference between the rims? TIA Andrew

I think you are right on track....I have 993 wheels on my car, but I'd have phone dials if they made them in 17's. I prefer 17 inch wheels on these cars since they match the wheel openings best.
Alfa Romeo made 17 inch wheels for their 147 and 156 models that look VERY similar to phone dials, but the offset and the bolt pattern are different so it won't work without some sort of adapter.
Good luck-

I have a set of 16" phonedials. One seems a bit scraped right at the outer edge, like from hitting a curb perhaps. Frankly, I didn't look that closely at them because I knew I would replace them right away.... er... pending backorder. Anyway a guy at work says he wants them but we'll see when it comes down to $$$. If he changes his mind when I have the rims available in a couple of weeks I'll let you know. The centers are not gouged IIRC but I'll give them a careful look before I let them go.

Before I had or even considered getting a 928 a friend brought his "new" 944 home with phonedials. I thought the phone dials were fugly.
I the key event that completely turned me around on the phone dials was seeing an S4 with them. Now I love them. This particular car had phonedials for some reason and no rear spoiler. I don't know why but I thought it looked awsome. One of the things I really like about the '80 I just bought it that it has no spoilers, and the phone dials go with the spoiler-less curves. The16s have a more sculptured look and are more attractive IMHO. I wish they made 17s.

I personally LOVE the phone dials. That would be another reason for me to own an early 928... In Europe, even the S models had phone dials from 1983 to 1985.

I picked up a set of 16" phone dials and had 'em polished. I love the period look that they give the car. 225 Kuhmo's are phat for the size, and look and handle pretty fair............
But, you'll see that I generally run these 5-spoke 17" units shod with Pilot-Sports. Now THAT's a tire!~

To my eye, phone dials make the 928 look wimpy. But in my mind I'm picturing an early car with 15's. I'd bet the 16's look better but I don't know that I've ever seen any on a car. As far as asthetics are concerned, the offset of the rear wheels is key to making a 928 look...well, like it ought to look. Early cars with narrow wheels and no spacers seem lost way back in the rear fenders. Same with the first discs, which are my favorite OEM 928 wheels. Having four 7" wide discs results in the same wimpy look in the back. The 8" wide disc wheel, with it's different offset, places it out and fills the rear fender space for an agressive wider look. I'm obviously not the only one who feels that way, because the price of a set of 7's and 8's is steadily half again the price of a set of four 7's. It seems that way, anyway. The fact that the 8" wide disc was offered only at the end of that wheels production and is far more rare has to be a factor, but the look of that wheel is really striking... of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Parnelli, You can see the 16" phone dials on my car, in my avater(for now) and on my site. I agree about the rear wheelwells. There was a "1200 mile" '78 on ebay recently with 15" dials.... If I had to choose between the two, the 16 does look a whole lot better. I don't dislike the dials, I just like the cups more.
