Default Water Pump

I've heard mixed opinions on this, but: Should I use gasket sealent when replacing the pump or should I install with gasket dry. Also, what torque value should be used on the water pump bolts. My CD did not specifically list torque for water pump bolts. M6 torque specs were listed -- I'm assuming these specs apply to the water pump.

I've heard varying opinions on the subject as well. Manual doesn't say to use them, but I don't see the harm in it. I can't fault Lizards logic, but I used a small amount nevertheless.

Correct, no specific torque specs on the bolts, use the M6 specs.

M6 is safe @ 6-7 ft.-lbs - and there are 13 of them! Have always done the gaskets dry - easier on, much easier to come off, no leaks and no risk of squeezing the gasket out of place.

I'm with Garth, if no sealant specified, I don't use. If bolts are torques to spec, there should be not leaks. The exception would be a damaged mating surface.

I will chime on on the other side. I coat the whole surface fo the seal and the block as well, with anarobic sealent. It stays soft so its seay to get off, but it never leaked on me.

That would be used for the oil pan seal. I have not read about it being used on the water pump. VERY messy.

Which WP bolts would you reccommend applying sealant to? The manual suggests that one bolt (I think its 42a) be installed with sealer because it passes through the water jacket.

Louie uses aircraft non-hardening stuff, and so do I. Question ... the one loooong bolt .... it goes in the 4-o'clock position, right? In other words, I expect it is a cambelt cover bolt, and goes on later? Just checking ... it seems there should have been a short bolt there, ans it is right below the "key" pin and you'd think there should be a torqued bolt there?

The water pump gaskets are now paper/fiber composite and should be used with a non-harding gasket sealant which is compatible with anti-freeze.

Asbestos gaskets were once available, and they didn't require sealant due to the natural swelling of the material when wet.
