Default Alternator questions

Well I drove my new to me 83 and made it 5 miles before the alternator light went on and the volts dropped off. It was 110 degrees out and I was running the AC. Car came from SC so this was its first drive in the AZ heat. Well I finally got some time to dig into the issue and removed the alternator today. So it’s a 90amp Paris Rhône. I’m guessing this may still be the original alternator but the voltage regulator has been replaced.

I ordered a new voltage regulator but I noticed the old one only has one wire and the new one has 2 wires. Not sure what’s right.

The other issue I see is someone added a black wire that is cut and I have no idea where it goes. See pic

Hard to see but there are 2 spring do-dads not touching anything

also I noticed some spring do-dads that don’t look correct (see pic)

Should I get a new alternator or just try to save this one?

Strongly encourage you consider a new one that puts out more amps.

Absolutely. Go with the Delco CS130. 14 volts, 115amps, self-exciting, self-regulating, cheap, available.

Was the alternator-cooling airflow-duct cover in place on the rear of the alternator? I learned the hard way, these alternators do not like heat.

yeah that cowl was on there but no hose. PO put a screen on it which was clogged. I ordered a replacement alternator. I guess I’ll need to get some hose as well

2.5" corrugated hose. Also suggest improving the way it fixes to the fender strut - see
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...placement.html
Its usually clamped to the wheel well front shield, which eventually cracks out from the screw holes. If you had no hose, do you have the temp sensor that goes into it - fits between the 2 hose clamps visible ? This drives the climate control inside - look for a 2 wire lead coming through/under the inner fender.

That will definitely kill the alternator, in the heat.

took the splash shield off and found part of the hose as well as the temp sensor. I can’t make heads or tails of the routing or id someone changed the routing.

Get a new hose make a support to connect to the front tab of the fender support cut the sensor connector out and solder the wires
most of the connectors I find are corroded inside and some have the wires pull out of the pins so it’s easier to take this out of the circuits
