You SHOULD be rebuilding this one.

Its 2022 pretty much now..you really believe this one isn't that far behind yours in condition?
Good working condition 40 year old automatic transmissions are sitting around like cord wood.
Don't you know that Mercedes used special "long life" rubber seals inside?

No I will be resealing the gearbox but I hope I wont be changing as much as i previously thought such as changing clutch discs and bands etc. Ill only find out when I split the boxes anyway.

Would anyone know if "ratios" are different between the two boxes i.e. R115 vs R116. I know the final drive in the rear differential housing has a lot to do with it but will the output from the r115 transmission be the same as the r116 transmission to the rear differential assembly?

Small bit of an update, I took off the transmission oil pan and found the attach debris in the bottom. Looks like clutch linings from one of the brake bands. Would this cause my no drive issue? I will be dissambling more tomorrow.

Yes. Brake band failure.

Bit more than a the 2nd brake band busted. Also the pin that pushes in brake band 1 from actuated side was snapped and the main rear shaft totally sheared off. I haven't gone as far as checking the clutch discs yet

Also the splines on the rear output shaft from the Mercedes 722 gearbox I have are different so I will probably need a donor Porsche gearbox to fix my one. If anyone has one the closer to Ireland the better

Sheared reat output shaft

Brake band 1 pin

2nd brake band

I am still searching for a A22 gearbox for my 928 but on looking through a few threads I am seeing that a 4 speed autobox swap is possible. The A28 gearbox is more readily available than the A22 for me. Some people mention the 4 speed torque tube must be used but others say some persuasion in the form of a hammer can do the job. Can anyone confirm if I can use a A28 gearbox and will I need a different torque tube? Thanks
