Default Mahle gods have spoken about pistons

Mahle is now making custom & OEM pistons w/their "Ferro Printed" iron screen skirt coating technology (OEM, alusil compatible stuff) here in North America.

OEM stuff is available at SSF 800 632 2743 Dave Truax/joe or ken...exclusive distributor in NA. pricing unknown to me yet, but I'm told it's far less than the $3-4k we have been lamenting over.

in addition, Mahle now charges $200-$275ea for custom pistons compatible w/our alusil blocks!! in any compression height, ring specs, dish, up to 107mm... only takes about 3 weeks to make, coat etc..

Lee Morse is VP Product Manager for pistons in NA, & welcomes all calls for custom work...800 255 1942 or direct 828 650 0800.

when asked about mahle ferro printed skirt coating compatibility, lee stated it works in nikasil or alusil bores, and that wear characteristic are similar for both types of cylinder. also stated 928 block can be nikasiled w/no adverse effects...but he'd like to sell mahles....also likes us 928 folks, cause he can sell 8 pistons at time instead of 4.... SOMEBODY LIKES US!! (w/ a few exceptions)

lee also stated OEM 968 dish is 27cc w/a 36.05mm comp ht - I'm sure someone can use that info...just makes my head hurt...

it's a new operation at Mahle, and they are ready for business...

hope this helps....

Are the same piston rings used for nikasil as you would use for alusil? Just wondering.

Yes, SSF now has them and there are plenty in stock. They must be purchased in sets of 4 and retail is $509.03 each, BUT we will be selling them for $325 each (min 4). Both Part #s are the same cost.

BTW, Mahle's new HQ/factory is just down the road from me and I plan on going down to meet them soon.

Are you saying that one set of 4 pistons will cost $325 (..$81.25 per piston), or are you saying the each piston will cost $325 for a total of $1300 for 4 pistons?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I have to make sure.

I WISH !!!

CORRECT, OR $2600 FOR SET OF 8.

I had hoped those first rumors of $1600 a set(8) were true, but one call to my trusty SSF rep and I found out otherwise. :-(

This is why I will nikasil my next block and run common JE or Wiesco pistons. I talked with Mahle for 6 months and they told me pistons would be in the $150-$200 range. When they were close to releasing them they told me $250-$275 was going to be the price, which was too much, and now it is $325 per hole??!! I hope they never sell a single piston.

Tim I agree that as I learnt more and more the price went up and up and that made me less and less interested. Are we sure the price is now 325?

This is my understanding (and at that price it darn well better), but my rep was not 100% certain and is checking to be sure. I will post clarification when I hear back from him.
