Judging by the exhaust pipes and the title of the thread, (SLR) that motor goes in this bad boy:
blau - you planning a 928 swap?

Hacker,

You are correct in that the engine is from this car. however, My design is slightly different, the intake and exhaust are different. My intake will run two tubes along the fender wells, similar to 85-86, and I plan on using DEVEK headers, a Dr. Gas X pipe, Random Cats, Spin Tech 3445 Stainless Mufflers, and dual T-304 stainless 3 inch tubing all the way back.

Not entirely a swap, but performance parameters very similar. This car has a 5.5L with twin screw blower driven by E-Mag clutch..

Ron Dennis is my hero. Yes, him and Gordon Murray built the Mc Laren F1. After theoretical ideas etc, this car was released, and confirmed my ideas. I then decided I should continue with my project.

The SLR is SERIOUS hardware. I love my S4, and wanted to do some slight "ahem" upgrades.

blau,
have you seen the Top Gear road test of the SLR? If not let me know and I'll post it where you can download it. I have about 15gig worth of Top Gear road tests.

Hi Hack,

Got lots of tests from TG, EVO and other mags. Another serious inspiration for me to use Autorotor and Laminova stuff was Kleemann. They get 640 Ehp with .7 bar (10 lb) boost and laminova intercoolers, from the Mercedes 5.5L AMG motor. No other changes, just intercooler and compressor. Hmmmm

@Blau

5.5AMG uses lysholm internals right? You're saying they upgraded to AutoRotor and laminova, and are pushing another 140hp? Thats nuts! I'm assuming they increased the boost a little though, how much by?

I can't wait to ditch this eaton roots blower i have and move up to the autorotor. I think i'll gain 40-50hp alone. Unfortunately - due to my financial situation, i might have to settle with the eaton a little longer and try it @ 6-7psi intercooled.

Mspiegele,

The Kleemann guys changed the compressor entirely. AMG uses an IHI with an E-Mag clutch on the SL 55. In addition, their intercooler cores are not as efficient.

The Autorotor blower Kleemann uses is larger then the MB/AMG unit. this allows you to move more air at a lower pressure ratio (boost) then cooled by a more efficient intercooler. THEY ACTUALLY LOWERED THE BOOST FROM .9bar to .7bar...!

Result, more power at less boost pressure due to greater density ratio..

Go to www.kleemann.dk and look up the SL 55. In addition, there was a recent write up in European Car on both the SLR, and the Kleemann SL55.

Cheers,

Not for nothing, I know you are designing your engine with this one in mind, yada, yada, yada, but this borders on off topic... Do you think you could at least keep it to JUST ONE THREAD???

what is this 'e-mag' clutch and could it be used on the 928? why is the autorotor charger so much better?

Nick,

E-Mag is my term for Electro Magnetic (similar to an A/C) compressor clutch. The autorotor is more efficient due to manufacturing, and design of the screws and case.

www.KenneBell. net has lots of write ups, and in Europe, Kleemann can tell you all about it. Birds in the UK is the Kleemann rep. Call them on the freefone, and they will give you more info.

Cheers,

Hey Blau,

Interresting mention of Kleemann - As I'm sure you know, it's a Danish Merc tuner specializing in adding a bit of bite to those lazy AMG factory cars ... A friend of mine works as a mechanic in their Cph. facility, and I've been considering asking him to help me tune my 928 for quite a while. I think I'll need a little more cash first though - Kleemann parts are rather pricey.

"The Autorotor blower Kleemann uses is larger then the MB/AMG unit. this allows you to move more air at a lower pressure ratio (boost) then cooled by a more efficient intercooler. THEY ACTUALLY LOWERED THE BOOST FROM .9bar to .7bar...!"

Boost is a measure of back pressure in the intake. More volume of air and less boost would mean the SLR engine and exhaust flows better than the SL. The cooler charge also makes a big difference in hp.

I've been thinking of adding a Kleeman to my E55. I'd love to have a four door car than run's in the 11's. The new 211 E55's are already running in the 11's on street tires as well as the new S600's with a little tweaking. Seeing a big hunkin' S600 four door luxo cruiser running in the mid 11's is amazing.

Back on topic. Maybe we can get a 928 supercharger kit like Benz set-up? The ones that are out are great and kudos to the innovators but these new systems that Mercedes is using are awesome!

Jim,

Andy K (Go Ride Sno) is now using Autorotors after we discussed the efficiency. I also discussed with him the integration of the Laminova cores into his manifold casting, and he is working on it.

In essence, it will be very similar to the Kleemann MBZ setup for the 928.

A W210 E55 makes 600 Hp when the Kleemann kit is bolted on. No change to motronic or anything else. Just bolt on some parts and go have fun...

Canepa Design in Santa Cruz, CA is an installer if you want to buy a kit. They also do a G55 install which is quite something for a Cayenne to be aware of on the freeway.

PS. I drove a Brabus SL 7,3 in Germany, and it was just amazing. Their new SL 600 upgrade is quite something as well.

Ciao,
