If I was stuck in the middle of nowhere and I had to change my oil filter and a 993 filter A) would fit and B) was all that was available, I'd consider using it. Otherwise, if I may ask, why are you curious about this?

I think an oil Filter is a specific development for the oil pressure and Flow in an Engine. Why should you change to unproven filter with a different configuration. Not a good idea.

PCA member recommended it while I was at the Porsche parts counter after they said they had no 928 filters. So, fact checking.

Did you ask if they'd be willing to pay for your engine if it didn't work?
Part numbers are different. I'm going to guess that it won't fit correctly. I could be wrong.

Given that we have some very qualified, dedicated and knowledgeable vendors, and they usually have prices better than the dealer, I don't see any need to go to the 'stealership'.

I usually have at least one spare filter for each car on the 'parts shelf'. When I use one, I make sure I add it to the next order I place.

FWIW... The 928 filter fits nicely on my Honda Pilot DD, except it's a little too long for the rib that runs underneath it. Else I'd use a 928 filter (cheaper in bulk through our vendors) and allow the engine to swallow the whole 5qt jug of M1 from WalMart. Threads=same, gasket diameter=same, relief/bypass pressure=very close, larger OD=OK, longer=not enough room.

That said, getting four or maybe even six Mahle or Mann filters from our vendors is likely cheaper than one Genuine Porsche 993 filter at the dealer parts counter, whether they fit the 928 or not.

You can buy Purolator oil filter for the 928 over the counter at Advance Auto. A black filter, I think Mann, comes inside the Purolator box. I've done this for years.

IIRC, Purolator made the factory filters for the cars in the early years. No worries. They were red though...
