Default Bought a ‘78 manual gearbox with lsd I think...

Bought it via a local online second hand shop. The guy had it for years in his garage. Apparently it was working good but made a lot of noise. He thought the problem was a bad bearing. Going to work on it as a new project and replace it with current original gearbox when it’s refurbished. Will keep the original of course and also refurbish that one later. I think it’s quite special a lsd box am I right? Bought it spontaneous for a low price. Going to read a lot first before I start working on it nice spring project during lockdown...

don't know Wopfe, if you didn't pay it much , it can be a fun project getting it apart.
But what if you need expensive parts to repair it ?? then i would do that with a later S4 transaxle.
( My 2 '82 928's have the S4 transaxle... )
Yes, the LSD on those old ones were better ( 8 plates versus only 4 in the S4 ) ... but i think "LSD" is a bit a overkill mythe for street cars. Unless you want to go racing/rally ?
Do you drive your car that spirited that you loose traction on one wheel ? except maybe a burnout start / fast exit corner for show/test fun ?? but average ??

Even in regularity rally i only felt need with one wheel besides the road in the mud/grass ..... and yes , better control going sideways and sure on off roads.... not average 928 use .

Last , wrenching can be hobby fun , but swapping a transaxle stays a rather "big" job..... wouldn't do it without a lift ... (at my age ).

As long as your transaxle is working fine now, i would keep it in there ..... LSD or not ....what if your "rebuild" isn't ... twice that job.....

Nice pickup on that trans.

What about this one - G28/05 111 1745

Going to do a fluid change this weekend and need to know if I need an LS fluid or regular. It's in an '81 Euro.

I'm thinking not, but wanted to double check.

Basically, it's one of the things left on the list The infamous second gear is not 100% so I need to replace the synchro. The point is when I would have to get it off the car I wouldn't be able to drive the car for a longer time, now I can work on this spare gearbox as long as it takes to replace it. Then i caan switch it and work on the original after that, it could take months/years. The end goal would be: have the original gearbox refurbished on the car and sell the LSD gearbox to pay for the spare parts at the end. But I actually want to see if I can do it, sometimes I think I like working on the car more than I love to drive it

The last time I put fluid in it, the gearbox actually felt like it was working smoother: I put in Redline 75-90 NS. After reading a lot of rennlist advice Here for example:
