928 questions from a 944 guy.....
Hopefully will be getting a 928 S4 next week and have a few questions.
1.Concerning the cam tensioners - when looking in at the engine, it appears to me that the 928 engine is two 944S engines, meaning that the two valve covers on the 928 look exactly like the one on the 944S. Same Beru wires, etc, etc. Is the cam chain/cams system different inside? I was told that the 928 doesn't have the same problems as the 16-valve 944 series (plastic ramp on tensioner breaks and takes out cam chain/valves, etc). What is the deal with this?
2.Concerning timing belts - when doing the belts, what is the tensioning procedure? We 944 guys need the "tool" (or a Cricket tool) to check tension. Is there a special 928 tool? Can the belt is tensioned by hand/twist method? And what is the deal with this tensioner warning light? Does it protect the owner from the belt breaking due to wrong tension? Will it tell you if the belt is too tight also? What are the re-tensioning intervals after a change and when doing a timing belt change, what parts do I need to buy over the belts/waterpump (and maybe some rollers if needed)? I will have the belts done first thing on this car.
3.The drivers side rear-view mirror was knocked off by my cousin while playing in the building where the car is stored. The white plastic triangle is exposed and it is kinda hanging there. What was broken and will my 944 rear-view fit on the 928? They look exactly the same (actually I was surprised how many parts looked so familiar to me).
That's about it.....for now. I'm sure I will have more questions as I become a '28er!

1) no 944 like issues with the cam tensioners. they are i think the same, but don't seem to wear. never heard of one failing.
2) need to use a tool (either porsche or aftermarket) to check tension. hand/twist method is not recommended/prefered. tensioner warning system is pretty primitive. only warns of low tension. retensioning shuld be done 1000 to 1500 miles after change. as far as parts to get, belt/water pump/gasket, tensioner boot, boot clamp and gasket (should rebuild the tensioner while there), rollers and maybe some other things like front main seal, oil pump seal since you're close to these. also should check the cam sprockets for wear and maybe consider doing the caps and rotors and maybe coolant hoses since these all have to come off.
3) not sure if the mirror will fit, but they do look the same...

2. You need the Porsche tool, or the 59 dollar aftermarket tool. The aftermarket tool is easy to use, and effective. However, it's only useable on the Porsche 928's timeing belt.

Hi Jeff,
Seems like you got to see the car, Did you get the PM sent the other nite.
I got the after market tool when I did my TB/WP 2 years ago and it works great. Another important tool is the flywheel lock, needed to take the harmonic balancer off the crank shaft. I suspect that if you do the belt you will want to do the Water Pump, and possible some rollers in the tensioner system. Another thing that I did not do, I'm so ashamed, is the tensioner boot and o ring. A couple of cheap parts that are now letting the gear oil from the tensioner run down the front of my engine, AARRRGGGGHHHHH!
The flag mirrors from the 944 may work, but in 88, I think, the glass and perhaps housing internals were changed. So it may look externally the same the guts could be different from your donor 944's.
I'm getting tired, long day at work, I forget what your other questions were. If you want to send me a PM with your Phone #, I could try and give you a call. Easier to talk then type.
Good luck
Richard
