Default Stereo Installation Photos

Hi again all,

I am proud to say that I am now the owner fo ANOTHER 928. Yes, the bidding was furious and competitive, but in the end I triumphed with a closing bid of $9495 on a very nice Gaurds Red 1985 Euro S with a grey interior. She can be seen on e-bay at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ME:B:EOAB:MT:6

The interior is origional, and I want to keep it as close to that as possible. This is because I have seen what happens to door panels on early cars when you try to get more speaker in them.

What I'm getting at here is that I'd like some suggestions on updating the factory system with something a whole lot nicer. If you have pictures, suggestion, or horror stories, please pass them along. If you have a line on a good custom shop in Tucson, AZ then I'd really like to hear about it.

Here's what I was thinking:

Blaupunkt Head Unit (CD 72 type)
3.5" Blaupunk Overdrive Coax in the stock location
4" Blaupunkt Overdrive in the stock location
6.5" Blaupunkt Overdrive in a custom kick panel on the lower front of the door
2-10" Blaupunkt Overdrive Saucer Subs in a Custom enclosure in the hatch
4" and 6.5" powered by 4x50 Blaupunkt Amp (75w RMS each)
3.5" powered by head unit (25w RMS each)
Subs powered by bridged 2x100 Blaupunkt Amp (300 w RMS total)

I have considered that with a bit of finagling the stock location in the door could take thin 4x6's and the rears could be 5 1/4", which I would like better as it makes better use of the power available. The amps would be bolted behind the front seats on the panel underneath the rear jumpseats. I don't plan on many passengers anyhow.

To see why I am hooked on Blaupunkt for this project, check out their new stuff:

http://www.blaupunktusa.com

Besides the slim features, the fact that it would maintain a semi-stock status is cool to me too.

Any suggestions on brands, installation, installers, and favorite driving music (I prefer AC/DC, Steve Miller, and Lynrd Skynrd) is all appreciated. Additionally, all well-wishers can send their regards on our new arival.

Incidently, my wife will inherit Inga after a few repairs, upgrades, and a paint job. She let me talk her into keeping her and selling the Saturn instead. I love that woman!

Will do, I'm kinda wondering myself if it's "custom" like good or "custom" like my front spoiler is actually a piece of plastic strip that's being held on by two part epoxy and the will to survive.

No advice on the stereo?

Well, I have speakers in the lower part of my doors, as well as in the stock location.
And someone mounted some in the middle of the door panel as well, but there are
no speakers mounted in there. Weird, huh? There is room to mount speakers in the door,
but the stock location has a lot of metal behind it, so you are limited, unless you want
to put a spacer, or cut the door. Putting some good speakers in the lower door area
is a good idea. I kept all my interior speakers normal sized, so they would not look strange.
But the small speakers do not give much bass, so I have a band-pass sub
box in the back. It fills out the bass the stock-sized speakers lack.
But if you were trying to avoid the sub box, I would say that you will
have to cut, to get any decent sound out of a speaker that will fit in a euro's door.

Here is a pic of my door, but not very large...

And my box in the back...

Off Topic - but important!

Hard to tell - but it appears that the 'e'clip is off the headlight motor bracket.
If it is missing...TAKE CARE OF IT IMMEDIATELY....otherwise - you will be repairing or replacing your radiator!! (BTDT!!!)

Also - you got more then you bargained for! The eBay listing states 300hp...'85 EURO's are 310! Hey congrats - a 'free' 10hp! But then - you lost out on the tires/wheels...215/50-18??? on a Dish wheel???

Mark,

What's the 'e' clip? I'll go look on my car and see if I can find out what you mean. Thanks for the heads up. For clarification (in case you weren't joking) the tires are newish 225/50 16 Potenza's on dish wheels. Also, the HP rating is reputedly more to the tune of 330, even better. I'm looking at some custom exhaust work in the near future. Any advice? For now it's all about getting the car here.

What do you do in PCola? I used to be stationed there when I was I young buck.

Thanks for the pictures. I like the way the speakers fit on the kick panel. I'll go for something like that. I'm not going to cut the doors though. I'll use the 10" Blau subs in a smallish enclosure in the back. They are only 2" thick so I think I can get away with a more discreet setup. The goal is a sweet system that doesn't scream out to be ripped off.

Tim I was so sorry I just couldn't buy this car (I bid) ... you got her at an incredible price. I hope to see her at the OC convention ... :-)

Tim -
The 'e' clip is a small retainer that goes on the bar that connects the headlight motor to the raising assembly.

There should be TWO - top and bottom.
It is hard to see on the PET - but check: MG8, SG06, Illus 806-00 part #29...it is shown as a 'lock washer' but it is an 'e'clip.

As to the HP - 310 is the "Quoted spec" (Porsche is famous for 'understating'!). I agree with your 330 hp statement! I have the OTT X-over (and no cats) on mine - SWEEEEETTT BWWAAAAHHH! and probably closer to 350hp. I love letting my wrench drive her at a DE and listen to her SING as she goes by at high revs. (no Viagra needed after that!!)

As to Pensacola - GREAT place to live...I am NOT in the Navy! I sell specialized software to hospitals throughout the southeast.

Mark,

Not in the Navy either, though they would tell you that Marines are the Department of the Navy (yeah, the Men's department).

Anyhow, thanks for the heads up. It'd suck to have that motor go through my radiator while carefully observing the speed limit on I-10 on the way from Dalas. By speed limit, I mean that which can be reached in a 50+ mile stretch of dead flat road. Gonna have to invest in that V-1 now too I guess.

Heinrich,

No hard feelings huh? It's nothing personal, I HAD to have that car. I'll take good care of her, don't worry.

What's the OC convention? if I can make it, I'm there. If it's later in the year, the wife can bring her new baby too.

Thanks, but alas I have obligations then. Why is that everything is getting scheduled for that weekend?

Oh well. I'm going to make it to one of these things some day. DEVEK days, Sharks in the Mountain, something. With any luck, I'll have her ready to go for the Cinco de Mayo event here in Tucson.

Anyone else have installation/sound system suggestions?

Tim,

If you can find one...go for a Blaupunkt Toronto...they fit very well in the 928 and don't have all the fancy color graphic schemes... Even has RDS which displays track/radio info and weather stuff..and an aux input for that MP3 player or other accessory.

Good luck in your quest..and nice Euro..!

Later,
Tom

Tim,
I'm not sure I'd go w the Blau 4x50 amp based on my experience with their PA 4100 (4x100). I went w it because it was small but it turned out to be crap..I went thru 3 of them in the space of about 6 months before giving up and putting in a Rockford Fosgate, which has been fine (much bigger though). I know Blau dropped the pa4100 from their lineup (gee, wonder why?) and I don't know if the 4x50 unit would share the design problems I had but thought I'd let you know.

Thanks Jim, I'll get with the tech heads before I buy anything. The new stuff looks pretty good, but looks aren't everything for sure. What was the problem you were having?

Tim,
I was watching this car also but got distracted by the red GT that showed up. I will be driving it from NJ to OR next week.
You got a great deal and like someone else posted, 10 free ponies!
