Default Shifter boot ideas

Good morning, hope everyone had a good weekend.

Are 20 & 21 interchangeable when replacing a ripped shifter boot? I'll need to double check by my '84 appears to have the #21a currently and I am wondering if I need to replace that with an new $250 +/- one or if just the bellows #20 can be replaced? I did search past discussions but most of what I found was nearly 10 years old so not sure if parts availability or approach has changed.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I’m sure there’s a #20 there, 5 more minutes :-)

Ha! I was jumping back-and-forth between earlier and later model years where the numbering was different by exactly 1,

I am trying to ask interchange between 21a and 21 on this diagram.

Sorry, thanks for the good natured dope slap.

#21 is for 78-79 only with the separate rubber shift ****. 80-95 use the one-piece ****/bellows.

If you have the original you might be able to find a local upholstery shop that could make you a replacement for less than $250, but the new factory ones are beautifully made. This is a new one, in my ex- 89GT:

The problem is that where the leather goes under the top of the ****, it needs to be thinned down (skived.).
However, you don't want "thin leather" on the rest of the shift ****/boot.
Finding an upholstery shop that wants to take the time to skive leather is tough..."old school" stuff.

Thank you for the follow up. I’m going to just order one of the new ones and then complain about the $10 a year it cost me amortized over the next 25 years. Ha.

If in Germany, I keep them in stock.

Let's talk about #21 for the '78-9. What's the best source for those? Were they all black? (I assume so, since the **** is black)
Are they difficult to install?

This is what I had my upholstery shop sew up for me, cost $125, they saved the top shift pattern disc and cut and sewed the leather around. Perfect fit on both cars
