2000 Honda CBR929RR
I have a friend with one, and today he learnt that when a Porsche 928 is in his rearview mirrors, he's not going to be able to say goodbye so easily ... up to 130 I held right with him, at which point it felt as if I'd better brake hard or I'd run him over. What a RUSH!!!

headline reads "929 vs 928". But really, the specs on the honda (I had a 2001 929) are 10.2 @130 in 1/4 mile and 169 mph top end. Pretty tough for a car to beat. The 928 is a lot more settled at speed, if you looked down at the speedo and then back at the road, you could have moved over 4 feet.
Every speed junkie needs a street bike in the garage also. It will fit without taking up too much space from the 928.

"The CBR929RR produces more than 150 bhp at 11,500 rpm and weighs a feathery 379 pounds dry"
"At the drag strip, the 929 asserts brute strength: it sprints through the 440-yard dash in 10.35 seconds at 137 mph and tops out at 168 clicks"

Street bikes have gotten even faster since the 929 (126 hp @rear wheel), the new zx10 Kawasaki makes 162 at the rear wheel. By the way, you can add 30 lbs or so to dry weight to get a real number. Still, way fast.

Have you guys seen the Turbo Busa?. (Suzuki) 500BHP on 2 Wheels - No ****! - So much Trq that at High Speed, all one needs to do is twist the throttle and your up on one wheel at 170MPH.
Damn, I miss my F3!

:-) Today's feat is on my shortlist for proud experiences in the Porsche 928. He said: "You surprised me ... I looked in my mirrors at 130 and you were there"

Btw a good plain-Jane S4 can do the quarter mile in 14 seconds at 100mph. The CBR gets there 4 seconds earlier, at 137mph. So, the very best drivers have 4 seconds between them at the end of the quarter mile, and if you ride you'll know that shifting at that point is an art and requires ***** and concentration. Before you know it, it;'s over. No we were not racing, he set out to get away from me as we entered a freeway onramp. The plan was to get to 80 and relax, but 80 came before we had even really started.

Creamed one in my jeep today, flew past him, he musta missed a gear. You do that against my jeep and your toast.

I have both, and my bike is a 1995, but modified...
Still, I know my 928 could not hang with my bike in most circumstances.
I have said before, that rider skill and driver skill plays a large role.
A bike has to be kept at high rpm, and shifted properly.
Much like a lot of the ricers, bikes need to be shifted at high rpm,
and some bike riders are not always used to this...
They freak out when they hear it going over 11,000 rpm,
and they shift before they should...
The bike also has aerodynamic disadvantages.
But still, it gets to 160+ so much faster than my 928...
The raw acceleration has to be experienced.
I'm sure the guys in the supercharged 928s have an idea what
it is like. If the Wisconsin guys kept up with a YZF-R1, then you should
know what it is like. So unless you have 500 RWHP on your 928,
you will probably not stand much of a chance in most situations
where you might race a sportbike. Yes, from 120+, you may do ok,
because unless the bike downshifts correctly, they may not be
able to use their weight advantage, because they are already
up against the wind. So if you want to "beat" a bike, starting
at a high freeway speed would be a good place to start the race.
But on an onramp? I do not think I would see any car in my rearview,
unless it was something pretty intense...
I'm not saying you did not impress your friend, and accelerate nicely.
It's just that if someone on a bike knows what they are doing,
and actually tries to race you, they will probably win...
And that is with most *stock* bikes.
Many people modify their bikes, and then you really have to watch out...

I agree with BC.... Roll-on speed can be very deceiving.
For instance, a Yamaha V-max has one of the lowest top gear 60mph - 80mph roll on times. This bike is 620 lbs and 145 crank HP. About 120 RWHP. How did it do this? How did it out-perform a CBR1000 or R1?
Simple, the V-max has a 5-speed tranny where the inline four bikes have 6-speeds. The V-max was closer to its peak torque at 5k rpm than the 6-speed bikes.
What's my point? My point is that under the right conditions the V-max will out-accelerate nearly any road vehicle available.
In real life with proper shifting, an R1 would walk away from the V-max.

Scott, BC, note that I never said the 928 had any more or equal torque or acceleration to the CBR. I just told you guys a real-life experience, I was ecstatic after my 928 was able to stick with a very powerful road bike. I am very pleased and my friend was very impressed. I don't know any other way to put it. Nobody put the bike and car on a dyno, we just got out there and drove hard.

I have no problem believing him, I have gone against a few crotch rockets, and after 140kmph they dont accelerate as fast, after 240kmph they cant touch you (possibly beacuse I havent met a bike rider stupid enough to go over that speed), and at 180mph they disappear mighty quick.
