need good source for OEM style cold air intakes
I need to replace both cold air intake tubes on my 86.5. I'm not really interested in "upgrading" the intake system, I just need new OEM tubes for both sides. anyone have a good source for these? thanks

I was told by someone at the last DFW breakfast that Roger now has the original style air tubes as well as the Mercedes style. You probably just need to call Roger.
(edit: I am not aware if the person telling me was speaking of the 85-86.5 specific air tubes. Good point Mark A. thank you!)

What Mark said - they are Unicorns - only 85/86 S3 cars

I myself got about 90 percent of the way to being able to produce my version of these S3 tubes. I have the inside form made for them and an oven specially designed to heat them and then introduce vacuum to form plastic around the forms. I set the project aside with about 4 or 5 issues that need to be solved. The first issue is how to make some tubing out of flat sheet ABS in about .040 thickness to fit closely around the form. That may seem like something simple, and especially for someone like me, but I made two or three runs at it and did not quite get there. The two mating edges of the sheet that glue together must first be beveled and then the sheet rolled into a tube and carefully held into position to be glued and clamped along the seam. I suspect that issue can be solved. The next issue is how to get the plastic, once heated to soft, to shrink smoothly down the the small diameter of the tube in places without wrinkling. That one will simply remain to be seen once something can be heated and formed.. Next, if a tube can be formed I haven't figured out how, with these tubes, can the slight bend be put into it, because they are formed straight. The tube probably needs to be heated again at the bend area to bend them, but with this plastic, after it is formed and then reheated, it has a pretty good memory and is likely to loose some of its new formed shape in the bend area.
Another concern I have is whether atmospheric pressure is sufficient to push all of the form segments into place when the vacuum is introduced. I guess that one will also remain to be seen.
I think I did a thread about this project some time ago, but don't recall for sure. Do a search for threads in my name.
Edit: There, I bumped it for you.

Could you not just use silicone tubes and create ports in them for anything that needs to attach, like breather hoses to other things. I don't really know as my car has a custom airbox and is also a different generation, but I've seen the long intake tubes the feed the standard airbox and seems like some people have already done this. Might also be possible to do something with the tubes setup that 928 Specialists uses for the forced induction kits that have the integrated filters.

no those will not work. The bellows after the taper is much shorter for the 85/86 due to clearance issues with the pipe organ intake manifold.

I had a bad experience with PartsGeek a long time ago and have never trusted them since on providing the right parts. I'm glad experienced folks are on here to provide proper guidance.

NOBODY has these 'in stock'. There's quite a few places that pretend to have ones that fit, but the "Pipe Organ" on the S3 cars intake manifold requires unique tubes.
