Default Cross member heat shield refurb

My 89GT lower cross member heat shields are out as part of a long WYAIT list. The metal is corroded but really just surface corrosion. The heat resistant material is fully intact.

I'm bringing a pile of parts to the plater. My thought was to remove the original heat resistant material, save it, get the metal replated, and reinstall the original heat resistant material. However, the heat resistant material is fused to the heat shield and can't be removed without destroying it. Parts are NLA.

The car is not a concours candidate, but I still like originality where there isn't a clear aftermarket upgrade. I like to fix things once and keep them in top shape.

So, best thoughts on how to proceed?

1. Rip off the heat resistant material, plate the parts, get some other heat resistant material to fit.
2. Leave the original heat resistant material in place, clean/grind the metal as best I can and prime and paint with high temp paint.
3. Some other aftermarket solution

Other solutions?

My 79 just had the metal pieces without any heat resistant material so I just sand blasted them and repainted with ceramic high temp paint. Yours adds a new twist.

There are a variety of heat resistant/shielding materials out there.

A quick search found this at Summit:

Personally, I'd clean up & replate the pieces and put new material on them.

I also use the ceramic high temp paint with good results. I find any plated bits that are near the exhaust just don’t last, unless it’s CAD plating.

Most engine mounts these days come with a rubber cover to protect the mount from heat and other debris.

Surprisingly, I was able to separate the heat resistant material without tearing off the foil face. At a minimum, I can use it as a pattern. It's amazing how sticky this glue is after 30+ years. Almost as bad as that crap that holds in the disintegrating foam of the forward-facing front wheel well liners. If I can clean it up without ruining it I may reuse them, other wise I'll make the pattern out of some of that material from Summit.

The shields themselves are off to the plater along with a bucket of other parts, fuel rail, throttle contraptions, etc.

I do like the ceramic coating idea. I have that on my 993 exhaust and its great. I should have thought about that before sending the parts to the plater.

Thanks for all the suggestions. If this doesn't hold up ceramic will be next.

Here's a paper pattern of the insulation you can use:

https://webfiles.uci.edu/redwards/pu...%201-19-18.pdf

And you can get DEI 050501 insulation to cut to shape using the template, to replace the original glass fiber /foil insulation.

Thanks Rob! That material looks great...much better than the original stuff I salvaged. I had the shields blasted and plated and they came out great. I'll post some pics of the final product when complete.
