Yep, you can do that or use a set of hose pliers to close off the rubber hose. I would start it and warm it up the normal way since it needs the AAV open for that, then once warm close down the hose and see what it does.

I got the car warm and it started bogging down so I pinched off the rubber hose with some vice grips and revved it up and the problem seemed to be gone. Unfortunately, I cracked the rubber hose but I could feel and hear air coming out of the hose when the car was hot. There shouldn't be air running through it when the car's hot right?

Once fully warmed up, the gate in the AAV should be closed so no additional air is passing through. There are some recent photos on Rennlist of an AAV in the fully open (put in freezer) and closed positions that will show you what it does inside as the car warms up.

The incoming air coming from the smaller braided hose right? Then enters the AAV and if the door is still open it goes through the larger rubber hose? The one I split? Or could that be backflow I was hearing?

Does the incoming air come from the smaller braided hose? It enters the AAV and if the door is still open it goes into the larger rubber hose? Or could air be backflowing through the rubber hose but can't go anywhere if the door is shut? There was definitely air coming out of the rubber hose when the car was hot and I had the vice grips on it.

I don't have any braided hoses, but the air comes in from the right side hose that's underneath, goes through the metal AAV assembly, curves around and then into the front of the spider intake body where the cold start injector is also located. On the AAV you can see a metal arrow on the part that shows the air flow direction. Those rubber hoses because of the bends and pressure/vacuum are also prone to kink and collapse. Mine have loose springs placed inside of them that are the same dimension as the ID of the hoses so they can make the bends, but not collapse or kink under vacuum

That's what I thought. There was definitely air coming through my rubber hose when the engine was hot. I'll let you know what I find. I did get my hopes up when I discovered my battery was completely dead and wouldn't take a charge at all. The battery was only 2 years. I replaced it this morning and hoped that would fix the problem but it didn't. My voltage gauge does read 12.5 volts now when running. It was 10 volts before but I didn't think much about it because my Fluke said 13 volts. Your engine is totally different than mine!

The basics of our engine and functionality are the same. Mine just has extra stuff on it like a supercharger, AOS, alternate intake, etc. Mines actually a 4.7L block from an 83 too but the K-Jet is the same.

That is a good thread. His issue is different than mine but people's replies give me info on things to check. I think it might be the AAV not closing after the car warms up thus giving it too much air.

I fixed it. It was a pinched vacuum line! I had checked all the vacuum lines originally because a buddy said it sounded like a vacuum leak but I was looking for a broken or loose line not a pinched one. I'm so stupid!!!

Yea! Glad you got if fixed, and No, you're not stupid. It's stuff like that which is the hardest to find. Now if you put hose pliers on a vacuum line to pinch it and forgot to remove them ...

I know a guy in Oregon that has a 914 in his barn if you're interested. He never got around to restoring it. I know it doesn't run and it needs work but I'm pretty sure he has all the parts, I think it's emerald green.

great news. It is often the simple things, but you do learn a lot on the way.

Here's where it was. It was the one on the bottom of the blue cylinder. It was kinked. I discovered it because when the car was running, the cylinder was vibrating and making a noise (sucking for air). I thought, "that's weird?"
