Default Lifter difference, does it matter?

So original lifters Can be disassembled domn to the check valve.

new INA lifters come in two different configurations. The difference is one has the same oil ring around the body and the other is smooth sided. I have received one of each when ordering to replace two of the older style.

I know the collective will suggest to replace all 32. Not an option at this time.

question..
does the difference on the two new INA types make a difference?
thanks in advance.

There is a groove in the lifter-bore in the head where the pressurized oil from the engine then pressurizes the lifter using the ring on the lifter, where there is a port.

So I will have to say that yes, it does matter.

For what it is worth, the lifters in my 1986.5 S3 heads have the lubrication groove around them. The lifters in a set of spare 1986 S3 heads I have do not have the groove. I don't know why they are different.

1986.5 lifter on the left, 1986 lifter on the right.

As well, I found nothing in the Tech Spec books or Service Info by Year Manuals documenting this change.

Thanks Seth,

I couldn't find any literature either.

Smooth bore just makes less sense to me.

To me too. I would think trapping some oil in that groove would be beneficial as the lifter moves up and down.
