Why is wheel alignment so expensive?
I was just wondering why the wheel alignment on a 928 is 5 times more expensive than a normal car?
Is it because you don't have to align it again until you remove the suspension?
I drove over a curb this weekend and fear that my alignment might have gone off. It was at 5 km/h, not really fast and my rims (986) are luckily still ok!

I didn't cost me 5 times as much.
I got an aligment for my 928, like 80 or 90 dollars.
My freinds Toyota was about 60 or 70.
Btw, it's been around 25,000 miles since then. No unusal tire wear, fulling, etc. Except the wearing out the rear tires because of a heavy foot...

Never heard that but if it's the case I guess you wouldn't have to worry about hitting curbs?

Oh, I've done loughts of stupid junk, and the 928 is a brick house, and I haven't been able to screw the alignment up.
360s, curbs, pot holes, etc.

Thanks, it's good to know that it's not overly sensitive when it comes to accidental bumping mishaps.

You don't...
The only easy way to check is to check the wearing of the tires. If it's even accrost the tread, and not excessivly fast, your in pretty good shape. Also, there should be no pulling on the steering wheel.
Also, check for bent tie rods, play in the ball joints, busted rubber boots. That sort of thing.

I tested the pulling on the steering and it seems to be ok. Sometimes it pulls slightly to the left, but that's probably because of the road. Highway driving at good speed seems to be fine...

I've heard of prices from $100 per axle at an alignment shop that is experienced with the 928 to way over $300 for a four wheel alignment at the P dealer here in the Bay Area...
The range is huge, but you have to make sure the alignment people are familiar with the no-lift procedure to get a 928 aligned properly. Otherwise your tires will wear very quickly, and you'll pay again...

I have tried to find the "right" place to have the job done for years. It's always like pulling teeth getting them to understand the part about lifting the car.
Sad to say, but I have had my best experiences at Sears. They listen to what I have to say and seem to have the best techs and equipment. $90 and guaranteed for six months.

$90??? Is that for adjusting all four wheels? I have to pay double that for just front alignment. I have been quoted approx $400 for four wheel alignment by several UK specialists, who say it can take up to 2 hours to do. Needless to say I haven't had it done properly yet, and so my fronts continue to wear badly on the insides.

I had mine done for $90, a custom job too! I took mine to the guy that Kim Crumb uses, but of course not everybody lives in Minneapolis. I called the specialty shop that I have had do some work, they quoted me $300. I'm not sure what could take so long. The 928 is pretty straightforward to adjust. Having a Hunter rack that does not need to lift the car to fit the wheel tool thingy's is the trick. Mine was done in about an hour and drives perfectly.
The only thing I can think of is that the more expensive places may be thinking that they have to get the ride hieght set. That IS a critical part of a 928 alignment. You can set your own ride hieght easily, then go get the alignment, that is what I did. If a shop has to set it, that is a time($$) consuming process and could be the reason for the high price quotes.

It costs so much because it says Porsche on the back.
Just like a contractor sizing up a rich person wanting a remode. All the sudden the 'job costs' go because they figure the person will be very picking, or they just try to make a buck.
