Default Photo of Trunk Area

Hello,

I am looking for a photo of a stock trunk area. What originally covered the spare tire area under the carpet?

I don't suppose it was a beat up, bent up piece of press board was it?

I have googled for images but almost all show the
depression open or with a speaker.

Thanks, Gary

Google again using: Porsche 928 trunk tire cover Click on Images. The original Porsche part is Clear plastic with an insulation type backing. Check eBay or 928 International and you may find a nice used one. If not, 928 Motorsports makes their own in Black plastic; funny, their description rips the particle board versions sold elsewhere.

After installing the spare tire cover, there are two large sheets of 1"-1.5" thick black foam that sit side by side to line the trunk under the carpet. These are made of the same material as the foam sheets under your front floor mats.

No pictures, but my 79 OB has a pressed wooden board covered with foam over the spare tire. My 91 S4 has the thin, ribbed plastic insert over the spare tire, also covered in foam. Both of them are also covered with foam inserts and then carpet.

Jerry Feather also makes a excellent one. Contact him to see if he still has them available.

Go to Bring a Trailer, find your exact year and search for a good stock example. Typically these would have been the highest dollar sales. I have found detailed pics on there for items/closeups/etc. I couldn't find elsewhere.

The foam cover pads are ~3/4" grey foam with a black vinyl face on the top side. Classic9 has the foam pieces available at a very reasonable price. The foam underneath varies by year. My 1989 car has what was an unsculpted pad there that is impressed by the tire underneath. In later years, that piece looks like it has a molded face in denser foam.

FWIW, I carefully removed and packaged the original trunk foam pieces, along with the original Sliverknit carpet, and substituted standard foam carpet padding, layered to offer the same height, and a little more padding density to protect the carpet. That's topped with a sacrificial look-alike piece of carpet for driver duty. In spite of the careful storage, the foam pads have deteriorated; I'll need to get new at some point.

The early cars used the pressed board cover, and the later cars used the plastic corrugated cover. I'm not sure when the transition occurred. In the US models, by 85 it was the opaque plastic. The RoW could have still been using the pressed fiber board though. Here's mine in my US spec 85:
