Poor Mary... every day she probably looks through her kitchen cabinets wondering where that muffin tin is.

I find egg cartons very useful for organizing things like this in the middle of a project and you can also write directly on them to label the compartment, plus Mary gets her pan back

Definitely time to reassemble!
So when you get to reassemble a 1980's "better than new" 928, how much of Porsche's fantastic engineering shines through?

And I'll second the inquiry on what the "Rod" upgrades will be?

Wow.

mine is not stripped to that point. But i am excited by just looking at those results. That is a stunning color.

who does the paint work for you out there.?
And what was the time involved after it was dropped off to this point.?

i have a shop here locally i am leaning towards, but i will trailer my car from vegas if i had to to get a top job like that done with a place that knows these cars.

You have a great shop. Wow.
Also, every single guy here 100% realizes how much extra time and effort it actually demands to
1) Do the actual work itself
2) Then also stop everything right in the middle of a real ongoing job and take a picture
2 b) Then also again stop everything right in the middle of a job and take another picture
2 b+1) Then also again stop everything right in the middle of a job and take another picture . . .
3) Load the pictures onto a computer, arrange the pictures, upload the pictures, supply text, edit mistakes, etc etc etc
4) Finally post up.
So, thanks to you specifically, and also thanks to all the people who post up this type of priceless knowledge on RL for us.

In these cars, I'm taking everything we know and applying a thin, even layer, everywhere.
The goal is simple: Make an early 928 brand new and better than anyone else can imagine or build.
More power (~375hp with emphasis on torque) with increased fuel efficiency, better exhaust with better sound, increased braking to match the increased performance potential of the new car, better suspension with shock valving and travel to compliment a lower stance, better handling by adding a limited slip, spring rates, and sway bars to reduce the 928 factory understeer, and more rubber on the ground with the tires and wheels filling the wheel wells....the list it goes on and on.

My current body guy/painter is just that. He won't take any of the car apart...we have to hand him all the individual parts. So we have to take the car apart and reassemble it, replace the rubber, etc.
He doesn't/refuses to cut corners...the car sat for a month, once the body work and primer were on, to allow the primer to shrink...then he blocked it out the final time.
While he's not crazy expensive, he's also not cheap (I'm not looking for cheap, BTW.) A "basic" prepare and repaint (with normal dings) is 10-12K. I furnished all the replacement panels, doors, fenders, etc. for this car, but he had to do all the labor to cut off the quarter panel, the inner structure, the door jamb, etc. He fit all the doors to make sure the door gaps were perfect. The "tab" on this car was 17.5K, but I didn't pressure him and he worked at his own pace....the car was there about 5 months. (But he's not very busy, right now....his "main" business is repairing small dings in high end cars...and the Virus has a bunch of those car parked, at home.) I took him an '84 911 Cab, last week, and it's already well on the way to sitting for its final blocking.

The "problem" with either of those prices (10K or 17.5K) is that it takes a whole bunch of time (labor) to take the car apart and put it back together. And all new rubber pieces are now over $7K, from Porsche.
It's petty damn easy to have 25K in a "paint job", when you toss in the cost of the rubber pieces, along with disassembly and reassembly. (This car will certainly be higher than that...17.5K (paint and body) + 3.5K of body parts + 7K of rubber is "bigger" than 25K....before we even touch it!)

I don't even dream of going to the extent that Greg is but if I was paid by the hour spent on my 'project', I would be a millionaire!
It took over a year to get from pic #1 here to pic #2 and I'm retired!

This is how it was advertised!

Stripped.

Curious, the front window, windscreen - (depending on where in the world we live) (example: Radiator is pronounced RAHDEEAYTOR) in the Delaware valley USA) I see was not removed? And, did you ever resolve your media blasting situation there in CA?

Correct. There's zero downside to leaving the front and rear glass installed, in a 928. Besides that, we have a fairly low success percentage at removing front windshields with breaking them.

Since the glass was very nice, we simply removed the trim for them to paint "around the corner" and down to the glass.

As far blasting pieces is concerned, I'm not convinced that problem can ever be solved...one time my powder coater does fine and the next time he ruins everything I hand him.

I just have to make sure the alcoholic that actually does the blasting is "retrained" every time....and go over and "burp" him, just before he does my stuff.
I wish it was practical to send stuff back and forth to Texas, but currently, shipping charges are....crazy expensive.

I was thinking just that; a higher than desired windshield breakage rate attempting to remove it. I am 100% 928 front window breaking rate, 1/1. I have the tools and have pulled about 12 front and back windows from American cars for media blasting, glad to read this! A buddy of mine hauls So Cal to TX to Fl weekly with his car hauler...hummmm I know what you mean about finding that just-right formulae for your subs! I have started to sub out some bigger stuff here, and focusing on smaller higher-end things made of Magnesium and Aluminum that have PORSCHE embossed on them in which 'Vato' around here would not know how to handle such items, and actually work on my OWN stuff and still make a few dollars on the stuff I send out. My powdercoater here is about 97+% success on things I bring him. As you know if the substrate is properly prepared we all look good!

Here's a couple more pictures of the restoration work on this car:

That's a brand new factory battery box, which I personally surgically removed and welded back in.

That 951, in the background, is an absolute work of art....also a complete restorod. I'll post stuff about it on the 951 site, soon.
