the footwell carpets, along with the cargo area on MY89 have no backing and are as limp as a dish rag. very disappointing, when compare to later cars. MY 90 has a very thick, heavy, yet pliable backing; that carpet holds its shape very well. has anyone sewn a backing onto the earlier carpets to give it some body and help keep its shape and form? ideally I would love to get hold of that 1990 foam backing, but hope there might be something else readily available? thinking it would be best to sew rather than glue
Does your '89 have the separate pieces of foam underneath the footwell carpet? The footwell foam on an '89 is (more or less, there are a couple of supersessions) the same all the way back to '78, driver's side 928 556 291 05, passenger side 928 556 292 03. 928Intl should have a couple of good used pairs if yours is missing.
Pretty sure the only way to get the 90+ foam backing would be from a parts car, and it would be a beyotch to separate from the overlying carpet, I think the foam is glued on. They do fit perfectly into the recesses in the stamped floorboards.
In my 914 I used carpet padding. It was rubber on one side and a dense fibery material on the other side. I cut it to match the shape of the area the carpets lay into and put it in their rubber side down and then put the floor mats on top of them. I didn't glue the two together so I could replace the carpet mats when they wore out and keep the extra pads. You could also just purchase a nicer set of floor mats from Lloyds or the other custom mat people. In my 928 I have actual stitched leather floor mats from Inpelle.
