Default 928 S4 door window problem

Hi guys, my 1987 S4 has been working flawlessly for a while and a litle clunk ( and slight pause ) appeared in the drivers windw on the way up, about halfway, the clunk got a litte worse ( bigger pause ) over the past few weeks and it made me nervous. Well, last nght, the clunk got really bad to the point where I got nervous about putting it up all the way. Now I just went for my seatbelt and noticed a big scratch in the window ( see attached )

Before I start taking the door card off ( which sounds like a bit of a mission ) what should I be looking for and are there any suggestions as to the likely culprit ???

Any help before dismantling would be useful.....I am curently in COVID19 lockdown so Im thinking I wil be struggling to get bits so is it better to leave alone till were all 'out' ???

Cheers.

AL

scratches on the rear of the drivers window after the big clunk inside the door, Oddly enough, Ive just noticed similar ones on the passenger window at the front.......arrrrggggh !!!!

Have you got a heat rejection film on the windows? They easily take a hit.

Once you know what has to be removed/undone getting to the lifting mechanism, although a bit of a pain is not that difficult. Getting the card clips undone without trashing them is a bit tricky- one really needs one of those slender fork type tools for doing that.

A clunk might suggest a tooth on the lifting arm or the motor has taken a dump. The bushes that ride on the lift guide post are also a known wear item.

Yep, had ceramic tint put on in November before our summer. It got worse a while after that. Does this mean i cant put tint on ??..or is the some way to mitigate the scratching ?. I will attempt to start pulling apart tomorrow. Hopefully i dont break any clips as I will have to wait for Roger Tyson to send more over and it takes a few days, especially with us all in lockdown. It just seemed like I might make these enforced 4 weeks count, epsecially being as Ive sorted all the paddocks and th animals out !! ...so its paint the house or tinker with the 928. Ill go easy on the clips and hope for the best. Im hoping the problem will be ovious and simple ( and cheap) to fix.

Ive also got a 928 S2 '1986.5' in limbo at the moment on the cusp of being started after 15 years. Its at the mechanics but we all got sent home before we coul hit the go button, how annoying !!

Thank you for your reponse and stay safe and well.

Your clips will break - plan on getting all new ones, black and white. Chances are your door armrest will need repair, too.

There are felt guides are old and contaminated with grit no doubt. I'd bet windows rattle when you close the doors. My 88 was doing the same thing, and fried my ceramic tint within weeks of putting it on (GRRRR). Buy new ones from Roger. It's not a hard job, just fiddly. A magnetized ball end hex wrench made the job easier (like this
Amazon Amazon
). I got mine at harbor freight for cheap. Also using a small piece of tape to hold the bolt onto the wrench end helps you get everything lined up without dropping it into the door...over...and over....and over. One side took 30 minutes, the other 10 minutes once you figure it out. Only after replacing these should you get your windows re-tinted. It's not a hard job, just fiddly. Here's an old write up about them. Hope this helps!

Default Update !

I guess it always pays to check the simple things before assuming the more expensive and complex option. The felt pads had grit in them... darn it !!! .... and the window clunk was when the tinted hadn’t aligned the window in the up position with bolts loose. I loosened them and it moved a heap with a crack, I thought bust the window. Then I tightened them again and it’s good as gold !!! You can see from the first on window where the old and new line is. No noises, no straining. Super smooth and I didn’t break a single clip taking panel off .... it’s my lucky day. Total cost of repair.... a big fat $ zero ! Yay !!!
