I'm preparing to replace carpeting in my 1981 car and after removing the strip from the rear latch area, I find the 2 openings shown in this image. What purpose do they serve? I can only guess that they may be used if a factory alarm is installed. I certainly have more significant issues to manage, but I am ever curious and love to learn.

John

The clips on the rear tool tray snap into them. Should be another rectangle like that on the left side. The small hole I'm not sure about, but may hold a rubber bumper for the hatch.
There is indeed a symmetrical rectangle on the opposite side but both were completely covered by carpeting. On my vehicle, the rear tool tray is secured by threading 2 bolts into the vertical side of this rear plate; there are no clips on mine.

My 79 OB has the rectangles with a chrome rectangular trim ring attached by rivets to hold the clips for the tool kit just as Petza914 stated. I don’t have the small hole in my car though.
Based upon the responses thus far, these openings served a purpose in the 79 MY and perhaps the 80 MY, but by the 81 MY, the tool tray attachment method had changed to threaded ***** as shown in this picture from https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1981-porsche-928-21/
At least in my 81 MY (manufactured 10/1980), this section of the frame remained unchanged. Since it was carpeted, the holes would not be apparent....until now :-}
