What would people suggest using if you really don't want to expose yourself to toxics? I have medical reasons for being very shy of solvents... Would the Simple Green be relatively benign? Or the Orange Citrus stuff?

If you don't want to mess with it at all, gather it all up and head for the local machine shop. They have hot tanks that are used for iron and also aluminum. This is what I have done before when I had an engine torn down and was prepping for assembly. It probably wont cost much more than buying all the stuff to do it yourself. Good Luck.

Good point, G-man. However, for the small stuff that inevitably gets left behind, Simple Green works pretty good if you let it soak for a bit. There are some citrus products out there that really work great. Try to get the " concentrate" so you can choose how much to dilute it depending on what you're doing.
