Maryland and my Valentine One
Just drove through Maryland yesterday on I-95 and noticed a large number of troopers, some in unmarked Mustangs and Camaros. However, my Valentine One did not go off at all. Anyone from Maryland know if the troopers there are all exclusively using laser and/or 'instant on' radar?

Flott,
Isn't Maryland one of the states that fines you for just having a detector - in which case they were probably trying to sniff your valentine out with a detector - detector (basically a receiver only) not checking your speed..
Seems you survived - unless you get anything unexpected in the mail...
Good Luck
Alan

I hope not! According to fellow Rennlister, Mike Valentine, Virginia and D.C. are the only ones that have made detectors illegal.

It might be a first-- Officers watching traffic to see what's going on. Consider that the highway is much "safer" (read: slower) when there are lots of officers obviously available to jump on a speeder. Contrast that with seeing some with cars pulled over already. If I see that the officer is busy with some other poor slob, I know that I don't need to worry too much about my own tail. If he's ready to pounce though, I'm off the cruise and watching the mirrors.
So maybe the most effective method is that kind of intimidation.
And lest we forget-- Yesterday was the first of a new month. No quota pressure yet!

Flott;
In all my 'roadside' conversations w/ Maryland officials they were all due to Instant on K-band. Haven't seen any laser there yet. =:O
Does your V1 shut down when it senses anti-detector signals? My Cobra actually shut the power off when under seige.

I can't say as I've ever seen them in Mustang's ar Camero's but nothing suprises me any more.
Hey Dr. Bob, You didn't happen to be snowboarding in Western MD this past weekend were you? I tried some 60+ deg. skiing but the snow was turning to slush fast.

Scott,
Thanks for the info. I do not believe the V-1 senses or shuts down when encountering detector-detectors but I'll have to check further. Anyone know this for sure?
Dr. Bob,
Yeahs, first of the month. But man, were they out in force (approx. 10-12 cruisers along the entire stretch) and about half had someone pulled over. I guess they wanted to get a lot of tickets written early so that they can coast the rest of the month.
Eric,
I was surprised by the cars as well. I believe it was a red camaro and a blue mustang and both had the flashing lights mounted on the dash. There were also plenty of standard cruisers (crown victorias?).

From the General Board:
Thanks, Peter.
My experience is all of the above. Radar (continuous and instant on) and laser. The Camaros and Mustangs are new additions as are some SUVs (I think they are Explorers). They will also pace you. The cars in question have some extra antennas but otherwise are somewhat hard to spot in your rear view mirror....

Dr. Bob et al.,
Here in Florida, the FHP often hunts in packs for speeders....big mission currently to combat so-called aggressive driving (and road rage). I'm happy about that. Speeding does not equal Agressive Driving (or road rage) necessarily. At any rate, the FHP uses aircraft, a spotter car (with laser and/or conventional radar detectors) who designates the next trooper in line (usually laying in wait on an onramp) to take out a speeder.
I'm sure this is common practice throughout the country...but it is particularly common on I-10 in Florida. Be careful...just because one trooper is busy with another car on the roadside does not mean that the road is clear ahead.
Cheers,
Tim

Mike Valentine is a Rennlister? What Porsche type(s) does he own?
I thought it was common knowledge that he is a Rennlister. He goes by W8MM and I believe, at one time or another, he has owned almost every type of Porsche created. (Mike- I hope it is ok to post this info.)
His signature line:
'01 996TT - Tip, Signal Yellow
'04 996TT Cab - 6-speed, Lapis Blue
------------------------------
On to new owners: 914/4, various 928's, 914/6 2.8 (Signal Orange), 911 2.8 TwinIgnition, Airport gears, Turbo brakes (Signal Yellow), 962-113 (used to be 962-102 until John Paul T-boned it at Charlotte, #5, Coca-Cola Red), 964 C4 (Signal Yellow), 993TT (Signal Yellow), 996 C2 Cab (Zenith Blue), 911RS/IROC - Light Green (9114600040), McLaren BMW 320 race car (ex-David Hobbs), Alpina B6, Alpina B7 (5er)
I can't speak for Mike's intentions in the future, but he has posted quite a bit on the Carrera GT board as well:

I feel that fellow Rennlisters should support each other and each other's businesses. Mike being a Porsche enthusiast and Rennlister definitely helped swing me to V-1 instead of the Escort. Maybe you should try to get him to advertise/sponsor the site, if not already attempted?

Flott,
Maryland is tough when it comes to speeding on our highways. I commute daily on one of the hairiest stretches of interstate, ripe with wily radar-laden state troopers. Some of the most creative & state-of-the-art traps that I've ever seen, and they get more creative every year. Eric - I'm talking about all of I-270, north of Rockville.
Unmarked Camaros, Mustangs, Minivans, SUV's, etc. You'll see one marked car with a few customers on the left shoulder, you'll get the confidence that you've 'passed the trap' get back to your 80 mph+, and whoops, right over the rise is the real trap, with 10 cars all waiting for their pink slips. Don't they have anything better to do? No. Doing something else doesn't pay off nearly as well.
Regardless of your equipment, you will eventually get nailed if you regularly speed...or I should say 'stand out of the pack'. I see at least 4 traps per day, going to & from work....and that's covering only about 30 interstate miles each way.
Although it seems like most traps are radar/laser around here, there are plenty of Vascar, or unmarked cars pacing speeding drivers. Detector or not, they'll get you....and they like sports cars.
It just isn't worth the false sense of security that a detector can give you, at least around here (Wash. DC suburbs).
I think that MD - especially in the DC suburban area - puts a great deal of manpower out there to bring in the $$ revenue from speeders....it's manifesting itself not only in manned speed traps, but in the form of permanent speed cameras & red light cameras, because it pays off, bigtime.
It's not until you get out toward Western Maryland that you can open it up, and that's usually kinda risky.
I hate to say it, but the next time you pass through our lovely state, stay with the pack. Let the guy in front of you get nailed.

Flott,
How old is your valentine? My wife and I were driving separate cars together the other day, me with an old v-1, her with the new. I saw a cop alongside the road and slowed down. My wife did not see him, but her v-1 went off and she called ahead to let me know she was picking up a bogey. I let her know I saw it, but my v-1 did not give a peep.
Not much further, she let me know she was picking up another bogey. Sure enough, we passed him sitting alongside the road, and when my wife called me to tell me she spotted hime, I could hear her V-1 in the background. My (actually her's since we had switched cars) V-1 did not give any sort of warning at all. Both in the same type of car and in the same mounting locations. Needless to say, it is time for the old one to get upgraded.
