Default ATF Quick Connect Fittings - Picture Heavy

Hi there all-

I was reading an old post (https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...luid-help.html) talking about the difficulty in finding the fittings for the quick connect on automatic transmissions. There are sources in Europe but my sense from that thread is that finding the right fittings in the US has been somewhat difficult.

I've found a few options for people that are interested. To be perfectly up front, I've only verified the quick connect function of the system. While I don't anticipate any issues once the fittings are connected, it's also true that I have not yet done the transmission fill with one so I can't guarantee that ATF won't leak everywhere.

Here goes:

This is the fitting in question, with the quick connect fitting covered up.

Connected to the car. Hard to tell but the quick connect is pointed toward the ground; has to be to use the ball bearing that lives in there to prevent leaking

I was going to clean things up more then decided that it wasn't worth the risk to me to mess things up, so I removed the assembly from the car. Removing the hollow bolt from the quick connect fitting WILL allow the bearing to escape, so be careful if you remove this. Here's what things look like removed from the car:

There's the quick connect that's been covered up for years. You can also see the hollow bolt that attaches to the transmission via a banjo nut.

Long story short, what you're looking for is a High Flow/Type V/European quick connect fitting. Not every fitting that I found worked (some examples at the end). Here's how it compares to the male piece of a set:

+5 HP
Overall, there are some slight differences but this seems to be the right match.

Here's the fittings I was able to find that all work with the part from my car:

Not pictured, the Parker part that I also found which was the most expensive of any of them. Links include the Parker part

I don't know that these links will work forever, so I'll include some descriptive text for anyone that wants to search for these things themselves.

That purple guy is a Milton ColorFit Hi Flo Type V coupler. About $7 at time of purchase: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The red one is a universal 5-in-1 coupler, also from Milton. About $16 at time of purchase: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That red sleeve is sort of nice in that sliding it up and down works to start/stop the flow through the connection (tested via a set of calibrated lungs)

The brass one with the hose barb included is from McMaster Carr, Universal Quick-Disconnect Hose Socket for Air. About $12 at time of purchase: https://www.mcmaster.com/53475k41 (there is also an option for a smaller barb, part number 53475K39)

No other packaging for this guy

Not shown is a part from Parker, also from McMaster Carr, Color/Shape-Match Hose Coupling. About $45 (!) at time of purchase: https://www.mcmaster.com/8636t121 (there is also an option with an integral hose barb, but only 1/4" which didn't work with what I thought I would need to do, part number 8636T151)

The reason I went so Rain Man on this whole this is because of what didn't work. To wit, McMaster lets you filter for European type fittings. That produced these 2 guys:

Hard to tell but these are CEJN brand fittings, made in Sweden

Messing around with things, the purple male fittings from the Milton set work like butter with these and, comparing things closely, I can't really tell what the difference is but the actual part from the car just absolutely refuses to work well with these fittings. <shrug>

For those that are interested, here is a useful chart that I found on the McMaster site to compare fittings at actual size: https://www.mcmaster.com/6534kac

Finally, here's what I intend to do as a next step:

Looks legit so far

Chapin garden sprayer that will be filled with ATF. The spray wand has the ability to lock open which I anticipate will be nice.

That's it! I hope this is useful for folks out there. I have a few extra fittings now so if you get really stuck let me know and I can probably hook you up.

Cheers

Good info, nice detective work!

However, for future reference, the ball which prevents fluid from running out has no resistance behind it. You can easily fill up the trans by simply clamping a hose over the port and pumping away. I've done this a couple of times now:

hacker: Agreed on that way to do it, also way easier to do. I just like to figure these things out and wanted to make a contribution (tough to do with the history and people that are a part of the community here!).

Cheers

The fitting is nice to have, just good to know of a workaround in case you cannot find it (which is what happened to me, still haven't found it).

Or even a tight fit of a rubber hose wont come off..but that works too.

Any idea where to get a new ball for this? Mine seems to be missing transmission fluid just pours out when I take the cap off.

agreed. A stout hose pressed into the fill spigot works well.
AND that a proper quick connect is a smart, best practice method.

Hey there...I have the ball included with a kit that I sell for this, or just with the coupler itself if needed.. I just throw the ball in , in case it's missing for someone
