Shifting on slow speed
Hi guys, I have my 928 S4 now almost 3 years and eversince it had this 'harder' shift, hard to explain, from 1st to 2nd or when I drive and slowly accelerate in Drive mode. when I accelerate normally or 'faster' like a normal pullaway it shifts smooth like a modern auto box, on highway driving also nothing of this sort.
When Im driving slow and decellerate it will also sort of shift 'louder' I remember driver other older 3 speed auto cars, they will shift hard between gears like a 'cluck' kinda noise.
is this normal or will it be better replacing the ATF / cleaning filter again, it was suppose to be done 2 years ago but I cannot say for sure since I did not witness the service.
can the pressure switch on auto gearbox be faulty ?
regards

I have only a small sample set of 928's I've actually driven, so take this with that in mind.
All but early S4's start off in second gear from a start, especially when you are gentle on the pedal. Some can be easily modified to start in first gear all the time, and that may be a help in pre-'89 S4 cars with the 2.20:1 final drive driven in traffic. The lower gear ratios in the 2.20 boxes makes up some for the longer legs in top gear, but still there's adequate launch torque in gear 2 for almost all normal driving. So... What year is your car? and does it actually roll from a start in second gear?

It's actually pretty easy to "confuse" one of these 4 speed transmissions.....and they do have some "inherent" design issues. (Keep in mind that we are dealing with transmissions that are very old, in terms of design.)
Not certain if this is what you are feeling, but here's one of the common ":issues":
The transmissions, after 1986 all start in 2nd gear.
If you are slowly driving off from a stop and let off the throttle, just as the car is ready to shift into 3rd gear, the shift will be extremely hard and very "clunky".
They all do it.
