Default Thermostat gaskets (more) confusion

1986/S2 M28.22

I bought a new thermostat... A gates one. It arrived like this...

Two gaskets - a larger one that replaces the one already around the larger part of the thermostat and a smaller one that doesn't fit anything that I can see/find.

The parts diagrams also show this...

...which I don't have at all. There's nothing like that on the car.

Could somebody enlighten me on what the arrangement is for the thermostat and its gaskets?

The smaller one goes in the far end of the housing to seat the thermostat. Requires gentle tap/pressing in as it is semi rigid. One at the top just seals the removable cap to the body

Ok - thanks - I'll try that. There was nothing there. Well... there was a little extra muck than in the rest of the housing so I'm not sure if it was "lost" at some point or had rotted away to nothing.

I haven't quite got my head around it, but I'm assuming the hole/seal behind the thermostat is a bypass circuit of some description.

cant recall. I think there is also something about thermostat orientation (?) maybe related to bleeding (?) Think there is a small hole near the edge from memory...

Are you SURE there was nothing there? That's what I thought when I changed mine too, but I was wrong. The seal is a flat metal core with rubber (or something like it) around it. The rubber on mine had disintegrated, and without a really close investigation, you couldn't see the metal part that was remaining at all. After I cleaned everything in the area I could see it. I had to use a small flat-bade screwdriver to pry it inward so I could grab it and pull it out.

This is important...stuff a rag into the hole that leads to the water pump. The seal remnants are cleverly designed to pop out like a spring and head straight down that hole. Fortunately, I was able to fish it out with an extensible magnet, but save yourself the heart attack.

what i don't understand is the U shape gasket for around the front thermostat disc…. in the end i used the "old" style O ring .
The thermostat front disc centers itself in a groove in the water bridge hole.... which is no more the case with that gasket around it . Yes, you can use it , but the thermostat can be mm's out of the center , sure if you have to mount it on the car as normal , so thermostat vertical…..falling down to lowest position in the chamber . If so , i doubt the gasket pressure on the top from the mounted boss for the hose….

had the same question when i changed mine with the same gates part, i could not see any function for the small one they supply, i had already order the press in one on its own but no way did the small one look like it was suitable, anyway installed without and its working fine. i think the small one might be for another car as it seem to fit many.

Yep - good call. The 'press in' one was there but in such a state that it wasn't obvious. It came out in several bits. I'll order a new one.

Neither of those gaskets are correct. Those are the sealing pieces that are common on the 944 engine. Is the thermostat the correct size to fit into the groove in the housing?

Greg is correct , the thermostat in the picture is for a 944 & not a 928

Hmmm... it's identical to the one that came out (I checked). That one had a Porsche part number. I'll go and find it...

It didn't seem a terribly convincing fit in the housing. Glad I asked...

Right... the thermostat that came out is 928 106 129 06 which appears to be NLA. The important bits are the same as the new, Gates part. It had the same "u-shaped" seal on the larger diameter. I don't think it means much - I have found quite a bit of "unconventional maintenance" on the car.

So, possibly correct thermostat but I need to get the two correct seals?

know what you mean..... its not really clear either ring fits & it is very different shape to what came out, was not confident of a good seal, but as i had the whole housing off i tested seal by blocking ports and using compressed air and it sealed ok internally and externally and now its installed the right hand hose stays cold until car is fully warm so seems good.

This entire thread is an excellent example of why ordering from the vendors dedicated to supporting these cars, and who are active on this forum, is the preferred option, ESPECIALLY if you're not intimately familiar with the vehicles. I guarantee you a call or email to Roger or Mark or any of those guys where you order "Thermostat for 19xx 928" would give you exactly what you need to do the job.I know sometimes you're in a hurry and you can get something locally or on Amazon, etc which is fine...but you will need to know exactly what you need and specify everything, where these guys probably know more about what you need for any given job than you do (certainly more than I do).

...which is all fine in theory except that I am located in the U.K. Most parts have come either from the local Porsche dealer or UK Porsche specialists. To be fair, for the most part they have supplied what I ordered which hasn’t always been the right thing. I am getting better at spotting the alarm bells and asking here first.

More generally, I try to use my local suppliers. If we don’t encourage our local suppliers then they won’t still be there when we need them ;-)
