'89 is the best year in my opinion due to first digital cluster/mileage with less likely to have TMU secondary to broken gear.
'89 is also the last year before air bags (you can use a Porsche turbo wheel, which is the best for the 928).
If you want a manual, go for the '89 GT (best of the best), then '90-91 GTs, before going for the 5 spd S4.
I would not hesitate to offer @Rob Edwards Rob Edwards $60k for his completely restored black/black '89 GT. Just follow his thread here on the cobalt '91 GT that he rebuilt and you will know why.
This is his cobalt blue GT on BaT: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1991-porsche-928/

All the cars look very nice. I did not mention the GT assuming the price would be more than I care to pay. I am on board with buying a well sorted car to avoid lower future costs of ownership, but I absolutely am not spending 50k. Thanks for the PM's, I hope one will fit the bill.

Baystate's and Olmann's cars are excellent. But if you are looking for something lower price you should contact MrLexse. His '87 black/black 5-speed was listed on BaT (twice). Buyer flaked out the first time and it didn't meet reserve the second. He now has it listed in the marketplace for $25K OBO.

A sorted budget long-view S4 might be..30-35k.
But a short view, where "what do I have to do that isnt done" is not taken into account, could be 15-25k

That's the confirmation I was looking for. I saw Mrlexse's car last week on another site but shyed away from it due to higher expectations. I read the BAT posting and all the comments yesterday, he appears to give an honest representation of the car. My budget is flexible to a certain extent depending on the car. I bid $35,250 ON the blue new York car a couple wks ago. I really like the silver 87 on PCA but all said and done with shipping I'm at $36,500. I'm thinking of reaching out to Mrlexse today. My thought would be.... Buy in to a less sorted driver quality, drive it 4 or 5 days a week as planned and sort a few things as I go. Make sure the 928 still does it for me. You know, puts that's stupid grin on my face while running through the gears. I was in my 30's last time I even saw one, a lot has changed since then. I bought my wife a new boxster in 14 that's super fun to drive, 6 spd of course. Anyways, if I find myself loving Mrlexse's car or one along those lines after 4 or 5 months, then I will sit back and wait for the right car in the right year with the right color combo and go up to that next tier to get a keeper. Maybe keep the daily or try to move it? One concern selling Mrlexse's car is the unknown mileage. It seems like all the 88 and older cars should be unknown smiles, I know my odo gear broke in my 86. What is 1/n referencing? Thanks for all responses, they have been very helpful in adjusting my expectations. if anyone is sitting on a silver, gray or any shade of blue 89 with a non tan interior speak now.

IMO, you are not searching in the correct marketplace; BaT and Rennlist are known to perhaps a small group of specialists? They are for “those in the know.”
Used cars that are offered for sale tend to show up on eBay, it drastically increases exposure. But the really great source is Cargurus.com, they grab all of the online ads. I just did a quick search using filter options for: manual transmission, 1987 or newer, and nationwide, quite a long list of cars are currently on offer that are actually much less than your budget.
There is even an immaculate 1994 GTS in Fort Worth with 88k miles, that one will surely be of interest to very serious 928 enthusiasts! Very sharp car.
Good luck with your search.

This is really nice, the colors you're looking for. Bidding ends tomorrow too.

This is a nice car as well and has been for sale for over 6 months, maybe offer them $30k as a starting point and see where you end up?

I am thinking the first one you posted is at least USD 35'000 to USD 40'000 car today. Especially if mostly original paint. It looks like the cam covers have been professionally done, etc.
The second indeed looks more like a USD 28'000 to USD 32'000 to me too. A little info on the supposed Porsche specialist might make that number go up or down a little. LOL.

My '87 S4 will be up for sale officially once I finish up a few maintenance items, between me and the previous owner it has over $18k in work done in the past two (2) years, so I think will be a really solid buy for someone looking for a great running Manual S4 for well under $25k.
My best,
Yasin

I have been all over internet. I have searched face book one city at a time all over the country. It seems like the better cars with better sellers are on the "IN THE KNOW" sites. The linen metallic car on Ebay is on a used car lot and I wouldn't mind that gold color on a sedan or something but not a 928. Im going to reach out to Mrlexse.
