I have a nice white with mahogany 1987 5-speed with about 50k miles. But I think you said you were steering away from brown interiors.

For example, if your budget is $20k and you want a '95 5-speed GTS you might be able to find one but it will be 1/1,000,000 in terms of how well it is sorted (i.e. probably needs extensive body work, has 100k-miles, could use an engine-out maintenance, etc.) On the other hand $20k may buy a high-mileage '87 auto that is 'almost' sorted - so 1/1.1 sorted.

The 928 'fleet' has become, in the last 15 years, largely bimodal. You can find well-sorted 928s that will cost a lot of money, or you can find less expensive 928s that, if they are to be driven with confidence at a whim, could use $15k just in parts. 928s 'in the middle' - those that are neither cheap nor very expensive and need some, but not extensive, attention - are farther and fewer between now. Those middle-of-the-road 928s have, over the last decade, either been purchased by enthusiasts who sorted them and won't part with them for a penny, or have fallen into further disrepair to the point where sorting them could be a $50k proposition (if you don't DIY all the work.)

One problem I see is that there are a lot of 928s that pass through the market where the asking price is the result of "a rising tide lifts all boats" and in reality they are of the needs-$15k-in-parts type.

The above is a generalization. There are likely still some 'barn-finds' or middle-of-the-road-928s at reasonable prices to be found. But, they don't just 'fall out of Craigs list' all the time like they used to.

There's a GTS for sale here in Napa, CA that fits that $20 model, but they want $45k for it. It runs, drives, but man, its a run out rag of a car,

Completely agree, received similar advice that a $15-20K car would easily need 100% of the purchase price in maintenance, repair and sorting. Probably not all at once but over the first couple years of ownership. Good luck with your search!

My car will be on BaT soon but happy to make it work with someone on rennlist. My professional photos are being taken on Monday and then ill submit. It is an 87 Black on Mahogany. The car has 109k miles on it but really looks like a 40k mile car. The previous owner kept records down to quarts of oil added to the car. It has service records and hand written records by the previous owner. I have a recent PPI on the car that shows it to be clean. Never hit, only paint work I can see and what was disclosed to me was that the previous owner re-painted the hood due to rock chips. Interior was recently detailed and it is flawless, seats, dash and everything look practically brand new (photos added are pre detail). I have the original radio as that is upgraded. It also has a set of headers and muffler (not sure brand but it is not loud at all). I added a few pics and if you want to shoot me an email at DadkhahLaw@gmail.com I am happy to chat more. I am selling this and my Vantage in search of a 458. I have 3 garage spots and my 993 is staying for life so this has to go.

MoD, that’s a very beautiful car!!!!

I love the Mahogany color interior, especially that they continued the color to the dash, pod, wheel, doors, everything! I haven’t seen that treatment in an ‘87 car before. Add a deep black exterior and it’s a winner! Looks like it was built without the rub strips???

I would make a minor suggestion if you are open to one, replace the floor mats with new ones that are true to the Mahogany color; the ones that are in there clash. It would only cost $100-$150 through Lloyd’s Mats for the front, rear, and the trunk mat; and they can add a Porsche or 928s4 logo for a few extra dollars. If you call them they will send you color samples (strongly recommend that you get color samples before ordering), it takes 2-3 days for the samples to arrive.

Beautiful car, I'm not so sure my dislike for brown interiors isnt partially due to the different variances of Brown's in the cabin. Great idea on new mats, would black work as well?
