Thanks for that note Jay, I agree that everyone has their own reasons and motivations for doing what they do. What you say makes sense to me. I think I will need the whole section but not sure. I found an image of that parts section on e bay but am unable to copy and paste it here. the image shows a couple of pieces to purchase or the whole thing. I also found some images in the repair manual that discuss some of these parts. I am looking at all of my options at this point so if you have a line on the parts let me know.

That damage is pretty bad, but as bad as it is be thankful you weren't sitting in the car right after you parked it when that happened...you could look a lot like that 928 does!

I have parted out and cut up my fair share of 928s, and one thing I've seen a few times is surprising chassis damage from what appears to be relatively light impacts on the outer body. For rear end collisions the chassis crumple zones include the trunk floor and the tunnel area above the transmission. I would be very surprised if you did not have chassis distortion somewhere in there. Tearing the wires out of the battery cable unfortunately tells the story of "way beyond outer quarter damage" I'd bet the door moved too.

If a typical insurance shop "fixes" this car it will never be right. If a quality shop repairs it properly, insurance will not begin to cover it. You're at a disadvantage working with the other guy's insurance company too, assume they will not treat you well. I would suspect USAA to total this car, and that may be for the best. There's plenty of 928s out there, if you love these cars find another one without chassis (and carfax) damage. If you work it right you could probably buy yours back from USAA for the value of a few parts on the car. The only thing better than having a 928 is having a parts car to feed it!

I hope it all works out how you want it to.

Actually USAA is lucky my car was not a person walking their dog as often happens in my neighborhood or they would be negotiating funeral expenses and a life insurance payout for a fatality with no legs attatched.

So far it does not look like I have any chassis damage, I do not see any distortions in the trunk area or under the car at this point. Also the doors both work fine and do not appear to have moved etc. USAA wants to total the car, I most likely will keep it and fix it but we will see. It looks like it will be some work to deal with USAA but that is just the way it goes.

My next step is to remove the wheel and tire to have a better look at things.I know the lower control arm is bent and the upper control arm is snapped in half. the brake line is severed as well. The exhaust pipe is bent just before the muffler and I might just cut the pipe there, then remove the muffler and install a temporary 45 or 90 degree pipe to exit behind the wheel for the time being. I have a muffler shop than can make me a custom muffler delete to my specs if I decided to go that route, I was contemplating that anyway so I might try it.

On a lighter note, what was the story for hitting a parked car on the side of the road? Impairment, speeding, ice, or the most deadly of all...engaging in "fake life" on the phone while ignoring "real life" on the road?

When I see dudes in Cuba using 2 old refrigerator compressors in 1940s and 50s cars for AC,,, in a car that wasn't designed with an AC, well, that can grounds me a little, getting me to re-think what's possible,,, and rights where and how I set my standards, lol...

Shoot - that's a beautiful PORSCHE 928 ya got there...!

I'm heading out in 25degrees to see if it will be possible to breath life back into a 2003 Jag XKR SC convertible that went for a swim in Texas. It's all good. Even when it's not so good, ya know?

18 year old young fella driving his dads Honda Ridgeline home from a friends house, for sure too fast and maybe on the phone but that was not confirmed as lots of things can distract an 18 year old fella.

It is a nice car, Here are a couple of picts from last year when it was all shined up. The Jag XKR is a nice car too, I like hardtops best myself. If it was not submerged for too long and if it was freshwater I would think it would be ok after some work, changing fluids, get the car running etc.

Well I managed to get the suspension and brakes back together last week. Replaced the upper and lower control arms with used parts ordered on e bay and a used pivot bolt from 928 international that I bought at the sale price which worked out well. Below is a photo of the lower control arm and the pivot bolt. The lower control arm was difficult to get out since the pivot bolt was bent and had to cut it to remove. I also had to cut a small section of rear quarter panel out to get clearance for the tire when I lowered it. I also removed the rear muffler as well.It surprised me how heavy the rear muffler is. It is now running again and took it for a drive, it is very loud without a muffler and the pipe exiting under the car right behind the drivers seat. I will put on a temporary pipe when I get a chance and later decide on final exhaust set up. I might use a small glasspack and pipe for exhaust but not sure. I bled the brake caliper on this side as well due to replacing the hose but the brakes are soft now and will need to bleed all of them when I get a chance. Lots to do but it is running and I can drive it so that is nice.

All the lines look good. I think with a new quarter welded in it will look like new. I also bought a used bumper cover and new used taillights for both sides as my lenses are cracked on both and one has a tab or two broken. Since they all need to come out for the repairs it made sense to replace them while at it and with the stuff on sale at 928 international I saved thousands over new.
