Default 928 wheel page - need your assistance

I just put a 928 wheel page on my web site and would like your assistance to make sure the information I post is accurate. I'm a little fuzzy on the early cars about when the phone dial stopped and the flat disc type wheel started. I'm also a bit unsure about the bronze colored finish as to when it was an option. I know it was available from 1983 to 1987. Was it available earlier and/or later? If you'd prefer to email instead of posting your input, feel free: chuck@928registry.org

Chuck -

Just FYI.......The Design 90 wheels were 7.5" front & 9" rear, I think the offsets you have are correct though......

Nice page!

Looks good Chuck!

Have you considered compiling photos of non-factory wheels and fitment information? I think that would be a real asset to those folks shopping for custom wheels and tires. Perhaps the registry is not the best place for this and perhaps someone else is already doing this?

Regards,
Bill

Chuck,

The early 5-speeds had 16 inch phonedials, the auto had the 15 inchers.
Though you could have ordered either if you wished.

The 15" phone dials did not come up before 1980. They were introduced to increase fuel efficiency. 16" were optional. You can recognize the 15" version easily, because the "finger holes" are not as nicely sculpted as in the 16" phone dials.

The forged flat dish wheel was first introduced in the US with the "competition package", not with the "S". To the best of my knowledge, th competition package was first available in the 1980 model year.

European S models from '83 to 85 had phone dials as standard wheels, and forged flat dish optional. From '86.5 onwards, when the front suspension was changed, flat dish were standard, because the phone dials no longer had enough clearance.

The club sport wheel was first introduced for the European Club Sport model in 1987. Club Sports, and the corresponding SE models for the UK were made from '88 to early in the '89 model year production run.

1991 S4 came standard with Design 90 wheels. I have never seen a '91 S4 with flat dish wheels. Design 90 was also an option for the '90 S4. Design 90 for the 928 came wtih tire pressure sensors, and so did the forged flat dish for the 90 S4.

The 17" C2 Turbo wheel was introduced for the 1992 model year in Europe and had tire pressure sensors.

I thought exactly the same thing about the '80-82 models. However, the factory brochures say that 15" is standard, and there is no reference to automatic only.

Does anybody have a factory sticker from that time?

Don't forget the 7x16 winter wheel, as posted at the 928 International web site.

Thanks Mike, I fixed the Design 90 widths.

Bill, I am planning on adding an "aftermarket" wheel page too.

jorj7 and Nicole, Thanks, I just remembered I have a bunch of the early Porsche brochures, I'll check them and make the changes. As much as I know about the 87-95 cars, I am fuzzy on the earlier cars. For this site, I am only documenting the fitments on US cars. Thanks again.

Keep the info coming.

My '85 928S has Bronzed looking flat dish wheels on it that are 16". Did some have that mirror finish like on your page? I like that a lot better. How do you get that done and how much $$$? Thanks, you guys are great and I love that 928 registry page!!!

I think most were polished after the fact. Its possible that some were done by the factory I guess. I had the stock wheels on my 95 GTS polished instead of having them repainted. I found a local polisher through a recommendation from another Carolinas PCA member. Some on this list have polished there wheels themselves, its a lot of work! You're wheels are anodized the bronze color and if polished I would imagine they'll have the mirror like finish.

Is the bronzed finish an option or was it standard on all the 928's? Thanks for all your info.

I believe it was an option on all 928s except the Wiessach.

My 81' auto U.S. has phone dials with 245/45 ZR16 in the front and 245/50ZR16 in the rear. Are my 16 in. rims an option?

Chuck,
Thanks for your effort! Looking forward to the aftermarket wheel page, as well. If there's a place for some text with experiences & opinions for the various applications, it would serve as an excellent visual, and reference for those who don't know the intricate details of proper fitment (myself included).
Keep up the good work!

sorry to keep asking simple questions, but what is the weissach and if that was the option, then what was the standard? Thanks again.
Joey
