Kudos that you found the car. What was the condition you believed the car would be in for you to consider buying it? Sounds like you expected some of the issues but was this just overwhelming? If I could get my hands on my parents 928, I wouldn't care too much about it's condition. But their 928 and the fact they DIDNT let me drive it, is the reason I got into 928s!

Seems a little anticlimactic but if it gives you closure, that's cool.

If it was still drivable I would have considered it. Even from the first wreck I didn't care about the Salvage title. That just made it cheaper to attain. Being that it was repainted and dyed was less than desirable but I still would have been interested. Since the second wreck being so much more significant has really killed it for me. I was expecting it to need some work and possibly some replacement parts. At the end of the day I really didn't want to have to spend double the price to get it back on the road. In that state it's in now, I hope it's salvageable part help others get thiers on the road.

Too bad you couldn't obtain it for scrap price. Then put the motor in a different donor car essentially running it with the heart of your parents car.

Too corny I know....

Glad you tracked it down.

I took a shot at getting one of my old cars back just recently, but it was in such great shape and the price was stratospherically out of my reach.

The last accident was front impact to a house. the really Sad part is the car only had 98K on the Odo. when my dad sold it, it had 85K. it's last 13K miles from 97 to 2018 were really hard on her, unless the odo was broken in the first wreck which is entirely possible. last reported mileage on carfax was 94K just before the first accident.

Maybe you can find a "tribute car," i.e. same year/color/etc that is in better condition. Probably end up being more satisfying that the frustration of dealing with a car that far gone.

That is definitely plan B. I have to get my jeep sold first.

Well, at least now you made it to the end of the road. Thanks for bringing us in to this cool mystery/journey. Good luck on your eventual search for your own shark - once bitten, you never go back!

The 928's have always been my favorite "exotic" car. I always liked the lines of it. I'll try to get one in the future maybe find one with the same color combo if I'm lucky.

He sold the car a little over a year ago to "some kid" as he put it. A week later this kid crashed it into a house. He said it was pretty heavily damaged. I asked him more about the car. He said it had been cheaply repainted in black and that the interior had been dyed black as well. When he bought it, it had a salvage title and was repaired poorly. The tie rods on the right side were still bent and the trans guard was cracked with a chunk missing. The blower for the a/c and heater was gone all sorts of electrical issues, leather was in bad shape, dash was cracked all over etc etc. With all that he said the car still ran great!

Not the ending I was hoping for but I'm glad I found the car none the less. It seems even if I had gotten to it sooner I still would have been underwhelmed with its current condition.

I want to thank Rob Edwards and 928cs for helping find the VIN number to the car. I'd like to thank everyone else here for all the ideas and information in trying to locate the car.

This whole process was a lot of fun and I learned a lot about the 928's. Specifically the 1985 928s models. I still might be in the market for one but I have to sell my jeep first. I think I'll enjoy being on Rennlist.

Sorry to hear man!

Was hoping for a happy end to this story.

I went through a similar issue years back when trying to track down my old M3. I found it alright... completely burned up in a salvage yard with ghetto wheels.

Find yourself another Euro.. You'll be happy you did. Lots of smiles for the buck!

This has inspired my own "dad's car" story. When I was a baby my dad had a '61 Pontiac Tempest (compact, 4 cyl, transaxle). One came up on Barnfinds.com yesterday, so I sent my dad the link. His response?

"Had one don’t want another"

I'm glad that you have found the 928 and it is pity that it makes no sense to save her.

It may be the right time to think about your own 928, if you would like to dive into the shark tank.

Sadly, this was expected with a 928 over this time period. The good news is, you can still have your Dad’s 928, it will just have to have a different VIN.
