...Does this car also have the star-shaped interior door lock *****?
Ah yes the mystery of the star shaped *****. Here's all I know about the three (yes 3) types of lock *****:
I don't know when star shaped ***** started, or ended, or when round ***** started.
The star shaped **** is actually 2 pieces, the inner piece that screws onto the square drive of the lock, and the star shaped piece that snaps/ clips over the inner piece.
I do know that car number 10 had star shaped *****, this is the only photo I've seen of a Press Car door lock ****.
928 #1 and #2 have round *****, but they're different than the typical round *****, the backing plates, and the the square drive housing screwed to the door.
Left in all pics: Parts from #1 and #2
Right in all pics: typical 928 stuff
The latest car I've owned that had star shaped ***** was Euro #997, I'm almost positive they used both types of ***** for a while.
I can pretty much guarantee the reason they dropped the star **** was because the outer piece would come off when the **** was forced. It is rumoured that sometimes these locks would jam. I found a lot of the inner piece only of the star style remaining on some cars.
I picked up this '78 euro 5-speed VIN #991 parts car over the summer. It's already coming in very handy for 928 #24 and 928 #2. The "never-mirrored" passenger door will be donated to #24 and the roof panel will be for #2.
Happy to see an exceptional black headliner, with date:
To extract the outer roof panel there are 113 spot welds to remove, in addition to a number of other odd welds in each corner. A huge removable sunroof would have been great in these cars, it almost looks like they were planning for it.
For this step I aimed to preserve the upper layer (roof) of metal and sacrifice the lower layer. it will be a different procedure to remove the hacked roof on #2. Well on the way to removing a major source of shame for #2.
Dumb question- are new roof panels NLA from Porsche now? I love the idea of using '78 sheet metal for the repair, but it's a heck of a lot of work.
These were available a few years ago, I guess all those sunroof delete swaps used them up. It's all good, metalwork is like yoga to me.. I'm average at best at it, it's hard work, but somehow it feels cathartic.
Maybe the sunroof cut out was A carry over from 924 ?
maybe this is what they thought of using ?
Just thought about the similarities. would be interesting if you could find a 924 sunroof to see just how close this could have changed our whole design.
