Okay... I am down to three choices:
Purchase a Red 86 5 speed with 78K original miles that just had the timing belt, waterpump and clutch done..cracked dash..missing center of front spoiler, clear coat peeling on about 3 inces of car ($7,500)
Purchase a Venetian Blue Metallic 87 Auto 78K original miles...cream interior (yuk -- I'll dye this), perfect dash and body, Timing belt and water pump done at 75K...AC needs expansion valve (11,500)
Purchase a white 90 auto 90K original miles, cracked dash and a few minor interior flaws..awaiting details on Timing Belt and Water pump history (11,500)
Decisions, Decisions....since I'll be relying on you all for assistance I'd love your take on which you feel is the better option. They all have merits.
I am at work so I cant get you pics but just assume that the body is good on all of them and I'll be replacing the wheels on all of them.
THanks!

The 5 speed cuts it.
For the difference in cost, replace the spoiler, color sand and reshoot the clearcoat. You'll probably even have money left over to do the dash.
YMMV

Is the '86 an '86.5 or not?
My pref would be the '87.......sounds like it has the least amount wrong with it. What's wrong with the cream interior?......the blue/cream is a
pretty nice combo......but to each his own.......
The '90 sounds kind of ragged out, and you already have a 928 5 speed, so maybe a little difference with the '87 auto would be a good one.

Here are the positive parts of each car
5-speed on the 86
32V on all
Venetian Blue (IMHO rare colour)
90 is priced low
86 is priced slightly low
S4 is priced appropriately
I see that you have a tough choice here. Personally I'd go for the venetian blue car because it looks so incredible. Btw I have a perfect burgundy interior from an '85 (S4 style) that I'd be happy to trade for another colour.
Best value for your dollar is definitely the 90, but ultimately to me from '87 - onward, all S4's are the same. So you'd get the same driving value from the '87 and it's a gorgeous colour to boot. This would be my primary choice.
If you don't own a 5-speed 928, then you are bound and must take the 5-speed, just because of its raw sportscar nature. Not easy to explain, and people love their autos (I've owned a few) but a 5-speed Porsche 928 is just a horse of a different colour.

Is there a particular reason you are calling off the search? None of them jump out and grab me personally. If the 86 is an 86.5 I would be pretty sure that is the one. I am also a five speed guy and wouldn't even look at anything else.
It could take a long time to find the right car. I wouldn't be so impatient. I found the car I currently own and then continued to look for another 2-3 months before coming back and buying it.
The 86 is the best buy IMO. Sounds like the maint is done. The spoiler damage is pretty common on the early cars, I wouldn't sweat that. Peeling paint would bother me and I might rule out the car based on that. There are a bunch more out there, I would keep looking.
