Alternator or the gauge resistor is bad. Not charging.

OMFG. So much for a quick top-off of the a/c.

The evaporator is a mess. Corroded and chewed on. The fan blade and it's housing is also chewed on.

Good thing the head unit was not plugged in. Heating up the fan resistors would have been interesting.

All part of the charm of a barn find. Great looking car, Ken!

16" P7s are available now, Minerva just got her set.

Great find Ken! Back to pure OB style.

Daughter had that happen, fan resistor ignited mouse nest on 84 coming back home from college on the first cold day one fall

Lotsa smoke in cockpit. Fortunately only smoke, no flame.

Separately, when will we see the first ljetronic chipset?

Good news: rear engine oil leak seems to have been just loose pan bolts!

Bad news: heater core is...

Ugh, don't see that every day. That seems like an unusual failure point in 928s, no?

It all went downhill after '80. Everything is so simple and there is so much room!

L-Jet is analog so no chips. I will probably revive a WOT wire harness I made for my OG '81 which allows the Temp II output to be adjusted at full throttle. Maybe, I can figure out a timed O2 sensor bypass after the WOT switch is tripped analogous to the 'Sport Mode' I programmed into my S3 chips.

Related to that, I'd like to make a timed trans kickdown circuit which I put on my '85 GMC (diesel) which holds the kickdown for ~6 seconds. It also disconnects the A/C compressor for that time, too.

Weird, but that whole area was stuffed with mice stuff. Continuous mice pee contact for 20 years is obviously not good for aluminum. The radiator cap was rusted through. Right after I installed a new cap it blew the heater core line and coolant started pouring out of the heater box onto the cat. Steaming old coolant mixed with liquefied mouse effluence smells great!

SEV MARCHALE alternator had bad diodes. All rebuilt now.

(Alternator guy said it is a pain to work on - wires tightly packed inside.)

First time running at length with rebuilt alternator and rotten heater core bypassed.

Ran better and better as time went on. Starts like a L-Jet should now after barely turning the key.

Runs close to the coolant temp 3/4 mark so I think the fan clutch needs replacing/refilling.

3-speed auto needed about one quart ATF top-off and the short rubber hose to the vacuum modulator was cracked/replaced.

Appears to have the original square tooth timing belt running on steel cam gears. Green lettering is still visible. Porsche stamped ISORAN Made in Italy.

What's the IR temp on the upper rad hose? Anderson sells a good aftermarket fan clutch should it come to that.

Thanks Bob. I hadn't paid attention to the new alternative (ÜRO) fan clutch. Back in my day there was only the factory version so I saved (OK, hoarded) a couple that may be good.

ISORAN is DAYCO, duh.

S3 manifolds?
Y pipe?
Advancing the distro?
Front S brakes?

Or have you, as I have, determined we can no longer modify like we used to?

Welcome back, by the way, old friend. (Although I only have two left in my possession and have not been present much myself).

Thanks, brah. I'm surprised by how nerdy I've become with this one. Since it has never been messed with (by someone like me) I don't feel I have as much license to change things, if that makes sense.

All of my previous 928s have had some problem or other. My S4 for example was worked over pretty hard and spent a lot of time in a body shop so many of the bolts are/were in the wrong spot or were not original. I replaced most of the badly repaired panels but it's never going to be totally 'fixed'. I got kinda burned out on it. Was even thinking of getting a Cayman S.

I've decided to work on this one in waves. Get it driving in totally stock form. Then slowly raise the power a bit while keeping it original looking. The 4.5 won't ever make big HP but it can make a big gains in torque. I'll be keeping the mechanical fan but deleting the vacuum limiter with factory caps (factory deleted for L-jet autos in '83). I've held onto some '79 cams I could throw in. Probably will make a Y-pipe eventually. Maybe do a MAF conversion (with a Split-Second HV calibrator). Etc.
