Default Wingnut or bolt?

Should I have a stud and wingnut instead of a hex bolt holding down my battery ground strap?

MBMB,

I had a wingnut on my 81, and have a hex bolt on my 90.
So I assume that Porsche "upgraded" this item (or ran out
of wingnuts and hex bolts were cheaper) sometime in between .

It certainly makes life a lot easier each time you have to undo it. I wonder why the stud was removed...

the wingnut is what I would go with for ease of disconnecting the battery.

"Wingbolts" are in both cars, but a bolt is the equal, if not better ( easier to slide a wrench in there than a reverse wrist twist!): the only issue is a clean, tight connection.

Depending on the length of the bolt/wingnut, the bolt can actually be quicker to remove completely.

I have a bolt on my 90', but want to install a battery switch there. Unfortunately, no battery switch that I know of fits without modification.

I'm going to get a wingnut, the regular nut ... in a car fire (been there) ... is not conducive to a zero-panic situation.

The stock equipment for your car is a hex bolt. Stud and wing nut sounds like a good idea....remember that the hex bolt is metric, so you will need a metric stud and wing nut.

If there's an electrical short circuit and you need to get the battery cable off ASAP, a very hot wingnut isn't going to be much fun either. Don't ask me how I came to that conclusion.

A hex bolt is not stock, a wing nut w/stud is stock. I own 4 brand spanking new ones that came with a Porsche 928 XXX XXX XX part number and everything. Don't know if you can still get them though. No stud either.

DOH!!!!!!! Set myself up for that one.

Correct me if I am wrong though, are they still available? I seem to recall I got them from some place Porsche NA (that's North America not Not Available) directed me to when I couldn't find a replacement. That's why I got extras. I didn't even have the fleet then. So naturally, I had to get a 928 for every wingnut I owned.

I was specifically addressing MBMB, who has an 89 GT, the OE attachment for the ground strap in the rear bay is hex EDIT Bolt, not nut. Sorry If I did not make myself understood.

Porsche technical bulletin, replace the wing nut with a nut, no explanation as to why.
