Default Super charger install, fourth report.

This weekend I got to the airbox, breathing tube and air filter installation. I also installed the fans, the blowoff valve and the various vacuum/boost hoses to the blow off valve, the boost guage and the FMU. I also torqued the crank pulley bolt and the bracket bolts (to the water pump) and finally, the over radiator airdam.

To Do: Plumbing for the intercooler, guages, oil feed line to the blower. Nearing the end of the installation project.

No serious problems encountered. Air dam needed custom fitting. Getting access to the driver's side front fender well required some secret knowledge of where the one remaining fastener was actually located.....

Thanks, wait till I put the OE foil stickers on the air dam. I am also looking to see if I can get a MB sticker that says "Kompressor" and other, very impressive german mots, and install it in place of the Vortex ID plate.

I figure maybe next weekend I can start the tuning, I have to get the intercooler plumbing done first and that exercise looks "detailed"......

In between SC tasks, I went to change the gear case lube and found it clean as a whistle. I removed the fill cap first (per WallyP advice) and some very clean 90 weight came right out. Quickly put the plug in and dug through my service records. Turns out the shop did this when I had the car in for a TB and general service 18 months and 4000 miles ago.

Gretch,

If you're trying to make the engine compartment appear stock, I think the biggest issue is the metal shine ("too new") and the welding seams, which sort of give away a non-industrial construction.

Other than that – woo-hoo!!!

Man, what mixed emotions...........the fabricated stuff is a work of art, I couldn't bring myself to paint or even get it dirty. But It would be neat to have it look like it was there from the get go. Tha labels on the air dam are just to give the piece a little personality, and the Kompressor label thought is really designed around getting the Vortech label out of sight.

I wounder what it would have taken to have someone take a grinder to the welds, and smooth them out a bit. Maybe make 'em look nearly cast.

Question. Did the air conditioning have to go in order to fit the intercooler? This is such an ipressive installation.

Going by the pictures, the intercooler looks pretty nice. I'd have to paint that air dam at the front black before I put the new stickers on it though.

Gretch, I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO envious!!!!!!!!!!! The install looks great, and from your descriptions, nothing that a decent home mechanic can't tackle. I think Tim Murphy, with all of his time and effort in R&D has really put out a superb product. I applaud Tim, Andy Keel, John, and anyone else that is working on the 928 forced induction front for all their respective efforts.

Cost wise, I will probably be going with Andy's Whipple set-up, when the finances get back on track, but I think Tims is a work of art. Continued best wishes for a hassle free install. And PULEASE post some dyno numbers from that GT (when it's done of course) so I know what kind power 8 psi will give on an '89 GT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No the AC stays where it is. Nothing functional is sacrificed, all the parts removed (like the fans and shroud) are replaced with items which perform the same function, just a different form factor. Only real difference is the crank case breather system "blows" rather than "sucks", but it "blows through an air / oil separator, (so it neither blows or sucks very much).

Chris, Dyno time scheduled for the spring at EPE. (guys who prep and run some cars in the 24 hours of Daytona, great shop!).

Excuse for another picture:

That big red/orange "garden hose" also does not look stock.

If I lived somewhere I could get away with it, I would have a totally chromed/polished setup.

But if you are trying to hide it, I'd say a lot of flat black paint and black hose covers are in order...

No stock car has colored anodized fittings, etc.

I'd vote for keeping the cool install, and putting stock looking plastic covers over everything for the visual inspection. Something like this:
