Default 1983 Oil Dipstick Reading Timing...

Hoping to better understand the "correct" reading oil timing/levels from the Group.

We took the 928S out for date night this evening. After almost a year, I remain amazed with design and operation of the 928. But...I'm still trying to learn the right way to correctly read things.

When we returned home, I checked the oil to find the oil level below the lower hash mark on the dipstick. I waited 5 minutes, and the oil level showed a little over 1/2 quart low. Waited 15 minutes and the reading was a little over 1/4 quart low. The Porsche dealer used Mobil 1 5W-50 for it's last oil change in August 2018.

I need to add some oil, but I don't want to overfill. My question: what's the timing to get a correct oil level reading on our 928? Thanks...

Same as any other car with a wet sump (99% of every car made). Once all the oil has settled back in the pan.

I check my oil before every drive (OK, not every single time, but maybe 75%).

Im having a hard time understanding why it takes more than 30s for 99% of oil to NOT be in the pan when warm.

Not very far to the restaurant and the oil wasn't hot, yet?

Distance to my wife's favorite restaurant was 5-6 miles...averaged probably 45 mph.

I thought the oil would settle faster as well...which led me to post... Maybe she doesn't like Mobil 1?

Gonna test this tomorrow, doing a fresh oil change for a man with a camera...long story, you'll all know soon.

Be about 90min between turning off and changing the oil, then ill start it, run for a minute, turn off, and check the oil over 60s as fast as I can and watch the level.

Motul 4100 15W50.

I check mine before the first start and maintain the level at the upper hash mark.

5-6 miles those 10 quarts are not even luke warm. Yes it takes time for oil (especially when cold) to drip down from the heads, crank etc...

You're over complicating this. Check the oil before you start it, ice cold. Only cars with dry sumps need to be checked fully warmed up, some even when running.

This has nothing to do with the brand of oil.
