Default What tires are you guys running?

Hello! I was wondering what tires you guys have on your car (and supporting that, what wheels and what year/trim car). I'm in the market to buy an earlier year 5-speed, and I'm wondering what summer performance tires are commonly run on these (and what winter tires, I'm buying one of these to be daily year-round). Is it possible to get a modern Michelin under the car?

Those of you with phone dials (I love the look of these wheels) what tires are you running?

Continental Extreme Contact DW, 225 50 16 on 7" Manholes all the way around.
I've only had them this year, but they seem ok.

18's on my 87: Sumitomo HTR Z III

16" widened phone dials: BFGoodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2 (not the A/S model, those are the sports, often confused)

Phone dials on stock wheels for my 78 I plan to run the new / vintage P7's:

18's on my 79, since the above Sumitomo's are discontinued, I'll be getting the HTR Z5 that replaced the HTR Z III

Exactly the same for the last 3 years and 10K miles. No issues. Very good tire. No track miles, just street and highway.

On my '79 Spyder

Front - 18x8 - offset 57 with Nitto Invo 235/40-18
Rear - 18x10 - offset 65 with Nitto Invo 295/35-18 and 15mm DRM style spacer from 928MS.

...but rear fenders aren't stock because of the convertible conversion. I run these same tires in different sizes on my supercharged 997 and have been through multiple sets. Treadwear decent, dry grip is excellent, especially cornering grip with the shoulder block design, and they're also good in the wet. Going to need another new set of rears on the 928 pretty soon.

At the rear Pirelli 335/35x17 but I am not happy with the short life span which is less than 7500 miles. Therefore I have acquired a number of Michelin tires of the same dimension and hope for an improvement.

Which pirelli?

Personally I'm a big proponent of #justgettheMichelins, I've always been happy with them and their performance. I'm okay with low mileage though, as I do a fresh set each winter/summer, so each set only sees ~6-7000 miles

Pirelli P Zero Asimmetrico 335/35ZR17. Hard to find and expensive, understand they only make one batch a year. Pirelli and Michelin are the only manufacturer of this particular dimension. The front tires do last many times longer.

Recently changed from Conti DW 18's 5 spoke Panameras (F 225/40 18, R285/35/18). The Contis had stiff sidewalls, rode hard over expansion joints. Lasted about 25k miles in 5 years. Not "sticky", easy to power oversteer the rear end if you are into that. Noisy at highway speeds. That was my biggest pet peeve about my 928. On trips to San Diego and Los Angeles, I couldn't enjoy the great engine noise and sound system I put in. Above 85 you had a choice, go deaf from the tire roar or slow down. (Really bad between 100-120).

Put Michelin Pilot Sport 4S on. Huge difference in the last 500 miles. Softer sidewalls make the ride what the 928 should be, a comfortable riding GT at all speeds. Expansion joints now don't jar your teeth out of your head. Hopeful about wear, supposed to last 25k miles. Much more sticky. On several roundabouts around here that with the Contis I would "feel" the rear end beginning to break loose and needed to correct (fun when you want to do that). With the PS4S tires, the same roundabout can be taken faster, without drama from the rear end. Much Much Quieter at highway speeds on all surfaces (AZ roads are not well maintained). They do cost more than the Contis. I highly recommend them if you can get them in your size and pocketbook.

I used Mercedes Spec Continentals on my 81 with 18" Panamera 10 spokes and the car rode great and handled well too.

They have very soft sidewalls so they absorb bumps with ease and for some reason never seemed to get any noticeable wear in the 30K miles I had them.

I drove the car very hard as well in the canyon roads during my old commute.

The Michelin AS3+ tires that replaced them handle great but the ride is much more firm because the sidewalls are much stiffer.

We'll see how long these last. Hopefully a while as they cost me $940 for the set with a discount

Nothing fancy, stock 16” phonies with Achilles 225/50/16...so far quite happy with ride and grip, got about 800 miles on them.

I'll never have conti's again. Had them on 3 different mercedes, and had sidewall issues with all 3 cars. Also had tread separation on more than one set. I liked the idea of the DWS, but had several recalls that I was never notified of. Purchased through tire rack. When you talk to tire rack warranty people, they will tell you they do more warranty replacements on conti's than any other brand. of course you never think to speak with a warranty person when you are buying and the people selling never know how many people on the warranty teams spend most of their time replacing conti's.

18" Sumitomo HTR ZIII on the S4
18" Michelin Pilot Sports on the GT

The biggest positive change by far for both cars was lowering the tire pressure front/rear to 32 psi from 35 psi. I got the numbers from the C7 Corvette since I run similar-sized rims and tires.

I was pleasantly surprised in the big improvement in both ride and handling by lowering 3 psi.

My '78 with Phone dials has Firestone Firehawk Indy 500. Mine are the summer tire but they make a All season version. I bought them based on the reviews a read at Tire R.
